In the eighth part of that book of instruction entitled *Gakumon no Susume* (An Encouragement of Learning) by Mr. Fukuzawa — a work much published and read of late — it is argued that "for one husband to keep many concubines is the way of beasts," and truly that is sound reasoning. Now this affair took place in Kumagaya Prefecture, a place named after a beast (*kuma*, the bear). The widow Onao, her elder daughter Osode, and her younger daughter Ochō — with all three of these women, mother and daughters, one man shared his pillow by turns: a certain Takijirō, living in Tagachō in Kawagoe. Despite his name, "Taki" (waterfall), suggesting a pure stream, he was a dissolute and lawless scoundrel; and because he had carnal relations with all three women, mother and daughters were on bad terms with one another, and quarrels between them never ceased. One day, after the usual squabble, he bound the mother to a pillar and dallied with the daughters before her very eyes — and the sisters, too, found this amusing. The doings of these human beasts, whose shamelessness beggars description, at last came to the ears of the authorities; they were arrested, and the whole party was sent up to the court of Iruma District, so it is reported.
