A certain farmer of Ashigakubo Village, Chichibu District, Musashi Province, took up his net to catch small fish and went down to a mountain stream, taking along his seven-year-old child. He left the child to play on the bank while he himself cast the net, walking here and there as he fished. Suddenly the child cried out: "Oh, Father! A snake is going to eat me!" The father ran up and saw a great serpent, as thick around as a small tub, come slithering down out of the hill behind them, on the very point of swallowing his child whole. Seizing a round cedar log that happened to lie nearby, he struck with all his might — thud! — whereupon the serpent at once pushed its way through the grass and trees and fled back into the hill to hide. The child suffered no ill effects whatever, and the father, too, never fell sick from the ordeal. This net-caster is a man of great courage.
