はめるといふ通り泣て仕（し）よふがないゆへに川へはめて戻（もど）つたと聞より母は気も狂乱（くるい）いそぎ川 辺（べ）へ
居て見れど最早（もはや）流れて知れぬゆへ内へかへり女の子を捕（とら）へさん〴〵せつかんせし所あたり所が
悪（わ）るかつて此子も死んで大 変（へん）となりしを母は思ふやう夫（をつと）の留主に申 訳（わけ）なしと又此母も
身を投（な）げて因果（いんぐは）は巡（めぐ）る一日に三人連れの死出（しで）の旅（たび）三 途（づ）の川の浅はかな事とうわさも

東京・高井戸村あたりでのこと。明治八年四月二十日、ある家の七つになる女の子が、去年生まれの赤ん坊を子守りしていたが、夕方になってひとりだけで帰って来た。母が「赤ん坊はどうした」と尋ねると、女の子は「お母さんがいつも『あんまり泣いたら川へはめる（放り込む）よ』と言っている、そのとおりに、あまり泣いてどうしようもなかったので、川へはめて戻って来た」と言う。これを聞くなり母は気も狂わんばかりになり、急いで川べりへ行って見たけれども、赤ん坊はもう流されてしまって行方も知れない。

そこで家へ帰り、女の子を捕まえて散々に折檻したところ、打ちどころが悪くて、この子まで死んでしまった。大変なことになったと、母は「夫の留守中にこれでは申し訳が立たない」と思いつめ、この母もまた身を投げてしまった。

因果はめぐるもの、一日のうちに三人連れの死出の旅——三途の川の「浅はか」な出来事として、噂も高井戸の名のとおり高く立った。あわれなことではあるが、これも（親子の）愛着の薄さゆえのことではあるまいか。

子をお持ちの方々は、耳をさらえて（よく掃除して）、しっかりとお聞きなさい。

At Takaido village near Tokyo, on the twentieth day of the fourth month of Meiji 8 [1875]: a seven-year-old girl of a certain household had been minding a baby born the previous year, but toward evening she came home alone. When her mother asked after the infant, the girl replied, "Just as you always say — 'If you cry too much I'll throw you in the river' — well, he cried so hard there was nothing to be done, so I threw him into the river and came back."

Hearing this, the mother went nearly mad with distraction and rushed to the riverside, but the baby had already been carried off by the current and there was no trace of him. Returning to the house, she seized the girl and beat her without mercy — and the blows fell so badly that this child, too, died.

Aghast at the calamity, the mother thought, "With my husband away from home, how can I ever answer for this?" — and she likewise threw herself into the water.

Thus does karma come round: in a single day, three of them set out together on the journey of death — a "shallow" affair at the shallows of the Sanzu River, and rumour of it ran as high as the name of Takaido itself. Pitiful indeed it is; yet was it not all owing to the thinness of natural affection?
