In Nagai Village, Usuki District, Hyūga Province, on the thirteenth of last month there was the festival of the Myōken Shrine, and the villagers gathered and put on their customary village play. The piece was none other than *Chūshingura*. When they came to Act Five, a man of the village named Seizō appeared on stage in the role of Ono Sadakurō. He got as far as the famous line, "Fifty ryō — it's been a long time!" without a hitch, and the spectators were praising him, saying, "The hit of the day is Brother Seizō's Sadakurō!" — when the man playing Kanpei brought out a hunting gun he had long owned, snapped open the pan and fired. In an instant Sadakurō was shot clean through, fell flat on his back with a groan, and died on the spot. Whether Kanpei, too, cried "There is no atoning for this!" and cut open his belly, there is as yet no reliable report. Strange things indeed can happen at village theatricals. A man like Seizō surely deserved no such karmic recompense as to be shot down like a wild boar; it is truly the height of pity, and the crowd's merriment must have been utterly spoiled.
