英語訳

【Right Folio】 Newly published in spring of the ninth year of Bunsei (1826), year of Hinoe-Inu Revised by Nansen Shō Somahito (Second Generation) *Title: "Fukunai Nozoki" (Peering Inside the Belly)* *Title: "Kiran" (Mechanical Device) — Complete in Two Volumes, Combined Edition* Illustrated by Shunsai Eishou Published by Eijudō 【Left Folio】 【Upper Section (Classical Chinese text, rendered in kanbun)】 In general, to treat illness one must first correctly identify its name. One who does not correctly identify the name is like one who climbs a tree to seek fish. The condition *senshō* (hernial accumulation) is commonly called "lower wind" (*shimo-kaze*). In the commentary by Ma Xuantai on the *Nèijīng* (Classic of Internal Medicine), it states: "That which accumulates earth to become high and large is called a mountain; *shan* (疝, hernia) means that which gradually accumulates." In *Bingyuan* (Origins of Disease), it states: "Shan means penetration/passage." There are seven types of *shan*: *jue-shan*, *zheng-shan*, *han-shan*, *qi-shan*, *pan-shan*, *fu-shan*, and *lang-shan*. These are as described by Chao Shi [Chao Yuanfang]. It is also said there are: *han-shan*, *shui-shan*, *qi-shan*, *xue-shan*, *hu-shan*, *tui-shan*, and *jin-shan*. These are as described by Zhang Zihe [Zhang Congzheng]. Although each is distinguished by name, their fundamental origin is a disease caused by the transformation of water and qi. 【Lower Section (Japanese text)】 It is said that "one should not take medicine unless one's physician comes from a family of doctors of at least three generations." However, if one reads the texts of the three generations, one is no different from a physician of three generations. Therefore, not only those of medical families, but also ordinary people, should give heed to the art of medicine. Indeed, Kenkō, in his *Tsurezuregusa* (Essays in Idleness), listed the study of medicine as the third most important pursuit. Although this book is, of course, a playful work (*jige*), the *Senshakutō* (Hernia and Accumulation Decoction) of Tōsandō is a prescription of unparalleled excellence throughout the ages, and this work arose from the benevolent intention of spreading knowledge of it widely to all corners of the land. Thus, even though it takes the form of humorous writing (*gekaku*), this is how the idea came about, and for that reason I have set down its principles herein. Spring of the ninth year of Bunsei (1826) Written by Nansen Shō Somahito
