虎列刺（これら）は昔（むか）しの虎狼利（ころり）にして衆人（ひと〳〵）の能（よく）知（しる）
通（とふ）り之（これ）より■（をそろ）#1しき病（やまひ）はなし昔（むか）しは此病（このやまひ）の
伝播（ひろが）る理由（わけ）を知（しら）さるに由（より）て予防法（よぼふほふ）を行（をこな）は
ざりしも輓今（ちかごろ）医学（いがく）大（ほふ）ひに開（ひらけ）と其（その）伝播（ひろか）る理（わ）

読者よ、これを理解せよ。思うに一般の人々がよくこの書を

コレラは昔のコロリのことで、人々がよく知っている
通り、これより恐ろしい病気はない。昔はこの病気が
伝染する理由を知らなかったために予防法を行わ
なかったが、近頃医学が大いに発達し、その伝染する理
由とこれを防ぐ方法とを究明し、専ら予防法
