[Right page] We did not ask them anything, nor did we speak to them from our side. All other crew members were able to communicate with us. That night, they gave each of us a padded cotton garment, which we wore gratefully. These were goods they usually brought to trade with the Ezo (Ainu people), but seeing that the castaways were in great hardship, they gave them to us from what they happened to have on hand. Apparently, the Ezo exchanged one padded cotton garment for two barrels of oil, which was worth approximately twenty-two or twenty-three ryō in silver. One account: From Akkeshi, heading due west, with favorable winds, we sailed day and night for five days and arrived at a place called Ōhata in Nanbu, Ōshū Province. This place had many houses and an abundance of timber, and one could see people of considerable means — it was a fine place. We stayed with our ship for one day and night, and from there headed to Mimaiya in Tsugaru. [Left page] We arrived at Mimaiya (三厩). On the twentieth day of the ninth month, we departed Mimaiya, and arrived at the castle town of Matsumae that same day. From Mimaiya to the castle town of Matsumae is a strait of seven ri. The tidal currents are swift and it is a treacherous stretch of water. One account: On the twentieth day of the ninth month, we arrived at the shore of the castle town of Matsumae in Ōshū, under the domain of Lord Matsumae Shimanokami. Handayū immediately went ashore by land, while the castaways were kept on the ship for three days. On the evening of the twenty-third, we were distributed among three lodging houses and went ashore. The lodging masters were the ship's captain Teshima Nakashichi, his colleague Eda Samouemon, and another colleague by the name of Kanzaemon — at their homes we were provided with one soup and one side dish for both morning and evening meals. During our stay, we heard many stories. Regarding the Ezo (Ainu)...
