**[Right folio]**
Out of deference to the Shogunate, no orders have been given to send large numbers of people to develop the region. However, if the Shogunate were to dispatch officials, have the gold and silver mines excavated, and order the development of farmland and fields, places such as Matsumae and Tsugaru, as well as other eastern provinces, would flourish, and even we ourselves would benefit from the prosperity. In general, there is considerable trade between Matsumae and Ezo, which greatly benefits the lord of Matsumae. There are many things that cannot be fully put into words, but these matters have been kept especially secret since ancient times; members of the domain administration manage the trade and take considerable care to prevent outsiders from finding out. Indeed, the very fact that talk like this gets out is itself strictly prohibited. It is only because you gentlemen asked about the situation over there as if you had some general knowledge of it yourselves that I have spoken of these things.
**[Left folio]**
So the person said. He then firmly bid us to keep silent, saying: "Please, even when you return home, or anywhere else, never say that we told you these things." When we asked about various matters concerning Ezo, he would say, "That is something I cannot say; this is something I will not speak of," and refused to tell us much of anything properly. Although it was clear from his manner of speaking that the land is vast and that there are many fine things there, he ultimately concealed everything and would not speak plainly. Within the territory of Ezo under the control of the lord of Matsumae, it has long been customary to say the range extends six hundred ri. There is a large river called the Akiyashi River, where salmon and herring roe are caught. Stakes are driven into the riverbanks, and the river is divided into sections — "from here to here, several hundred ryō; from here to here, several hundred ryō" — with fish weirs (yana) set up to catch salmon and the like. Money is paid to the lord, and merchants from Tsugaru and elsewhere (purchase the salmon)...
