**[Right folio]** (Asaemon) said, "The way things stand, this is truly a pitiful matter," and this was heard through into the kitchen area. Then Shirōemon came out and said, "Since it is such a lengthy affair, you likely cannot remember it all clearly, so please write it down and submit it." We therefore wrote down everything in full [on paper at the shore/edge], and had the captain submit it. He was then called before Asaemon, who said he would hear the account directly. When the captain explained everything without leaving out a single detail, Asaemon showed his displeasure, saying: "Although Etorofu is a remote island where our governance does not fully reach, and it differs from the Matsumae mainland territories, such [outrageous conduct] ought not to have occurred," and he was visibly in poor temper. Seeing this reaction, the helmsman Sangōrō, trying to smooth things over, said: "No, it was not quite as described. On the island, **[Left folio]** they did look after us in various ways. As for the ship, the cargo and everything else were all let go — abandoned — out at sea. Nagaemon of the Yamakawa [vessel] passed away due to illness." Upon hearing this, Asaemon said, "Indeed, that must be how it was." Then, at the office of Okabe Shirōemon, a written document was handed over to our party. We were also given a draft document indicating that we should write out our own statement and submit it, and so we wrote it out accordingly, affixed our fingerprints, and handed it over. After this, we were told: "We should send you as far as Tsugaru from here, but unfortunately no suitable ship is available at this time. Fortunately, there happens to be a convenient vessel. Would you care to board that and proceed?" We replied, "Please send us by way of that convenient vessel," and two ships were arranged for the purpose. The entire party…
