**[Right folio]** Ten ryō in koban (gold coins) were provided as travel funds, and seven tan of cotton cloth were given for the making of momohiki (close-fitting trousers). We immediately asked the innkeeper to have them sewn and made up. The innkeeper's own captain also gave each person a hand towel as a head-wrap, saying "Your heads will likely be cold on the voyage." The other innkeepers also each gave us a little tobacco. And so, from here, we set out directly to return to our home domain. We were asked by the town magistrate (machi-bugyō) whether we intended to stop in Edo or Osaka along the way. If we were to say "we are going to Edo," it seemed likely — given the account of how things had been handled on Etorofu — that this would reflect poorly on the Matsumae authorities, and we surmised they were being cautious about this. So we replied, "We intend to go to Osaka; however, we would like to decide our course of action after crossing to Tsugaru," **[Left folio]** upon which we were asked, "Do you have a resident agent (rusuí) or similar representative in Osaka?" We replied that we did indeed have a rusuí. They said, "In that case, it would be best to proceed to Osaka after all." The document handed to us by the authorities is recorded below. *Item:* The captain Nagaemon of Konegoko village, within the domain of Lord Matsudaira Satsuma-no-kami, together with a crew of fifteen men in total, was carrying official rice (goyōmai) for Lord Satsuma-no-kami, and on the twelfth day of the eleventh month of last year, the year of the Rabbit, while en route to Osaka, was struck by a violent storm, blown out to sea, and drifted helplessly. On the sixth day of the fourth month of this year, they arrived as castaways and suffered shipwreck at the island called Etorofu, within the Ezo territories of our domain. The Ainu people of that place looked after them; however, among the aforementioned fifteen persons, a crew member called Nagaemon of Yamakawa-machi within our domain…
