【Right folio】 We traveled entirely on foot. Between Nanbu and Tsugaru, we encountered a group of three merchants, and in Nanbu we lodged together at the same inn. Of the three, two were Chōgorō [and associates] from Ōmatsu-chō in Osaka, and one was reportedly from Ise. All were ship carpenters, who had traveled to Ōshū (the Mutsu/Tōhoku region) to build ships and were now returning. When they asked us, "From what part of the country are you gentlemen?" we replied, "We are from the western provinces," and when they asked further, "Which domain, specifically?" we told them, "We are from Satsuma, and we drifted ashore in such a terrible storm" — and told them the whole story. They said, "My, my, what a terrible ordeal! Even in Osaka we had already heard something of this matter. Upon arriving at Etorofu, you must have suffered 【Left folio】 tremendous hardship indeed. As for travel funds — if you are short, we would be happy to give you two or three ryō." However, we told them we had a sufficient amount in hand, whereupon they bought each of us a sedge hat (sugegasa) as a gift. The following day we parted ways; as those men were traveling on horseback, we did not ask anything further of them. Thereafter, after twenty-four days on the road, we arrived at the domain residence in Shiba, Edo, in Musashi Province, on the fourth day of the eleventh month. □□□□□ The general circumstances of the above drift voyage have been recorded in an illustrated map/diagram.
