（前頁より続き）雷のごとく、立ち昇る塵埃は黒煙のごとく、天を覆って日の光を見ることもできなかった。山は崩れ、川を埋め、海はただよい浜に打ち寄せた。大地は稲妻のごとく裂けて水が湧き出し、巨岩は割れて谷に転がり落ち、人民・六畜の死する者の数は知れなかった。このとき白河法皇は熊野御幸の途中で、お花を奉納されていた折のことであり、触穢が生じたとのことで、急ぎ御輿に召されて、からうじて都の六条殿に還幸なさった。南庭に仮屋を設けてご座所とされた。主上（天皇）は鳳輦に召されて池のほとりに御幸なさった。

The earth cracked open like lightning strikes, and water gushed forth; great boulders split apart and tumbled into valleys. The number of people and livestock that perished was beyond counting. At this time, the Retired Emperor Shirakawa was on a pilgrimage to Kumano, in the midst of offering flowers, when the incident of ritual defilement (*shokue*) arose. He hastily boarded his palanquin and barely managed to return to the Rokujō Palace in the capital. A temporary shelter was set up in the south garden as his residence. The reigning Emperor was carried in the imperial palanquin (*hōren*) and proceeded to the edge of a pond.
