The number of those who died is unknown. More recently, in the third month of Bunka 1, Year of the Wood Rat (1804), there was a great earthquake in Akita, Dewa Province. Mount Kisakata collapsed and many died. Also, on the twelfth day of the sixth month of Bunsei 5, Year of the Water Horse (1822), there was an earthquake in Kyoto. At this time, the Hachiman area in Omi Province was particularly severely affected. On the twelfth day of the eleventh month of Bunsei 11, Year of the Rat (1828), at the fifth hour of dawn, there was a great earthquake covering about ten ri in all directions around Sanjo, Mitsuke, Nagaoka, Yoita, and Wakino-machi in Echigo Province. At that time there were fires and about thirty thousand people died unnatural deaths, along with about six thousand cattle and horses. The damage to shrines and temples, large buildings, and private houses was said to be incalculable.
Generally speaking, there have been earthquakes in various provinces since ancient times, but I record only those that are written in historical documents. If there are any errors in dates and times, I humbly ask for forgiveness.
Now, this year, Bunsei 13, Year of the Metal Tiger (1830), on the second day of the seventh month. From morning, the sky was neither clear nor cloudy. It had what people commonly call an "oil-shine" appearance, and the muggy heat was even more oppressive than yesterday and difficult to bear. Just as I was thinking that when it reached about the seventh hour (around 4 PM), the heat should subside somewhat, suddenly there came a rumbling like thunder, and a tremendous earthquake began. Before people could even wonder what was happening, a great earthquake continued, and houses and storehouses could be seen swaying as if waves were crashing against them. Moreover, earthen storehouses, high walls, stone lanterns, and various utensils and tools...
