夫（それ）地（ち）といふ文字（もじ）往昔（むかし）は埊（ち）に作（つく）る。これ会意（くはいい）なり。史記（しき）
漢書（かんじよ）に墜（ち）に作る。震（しん）は動（どう）なり亦（また）怒（ど）なりともいへり。天は
動（うごい）て四時（しじ）を為（な）し。地（ち）は静（しづか）にして万物（ばんもつ）を養（やしな）ふ。しかりと
いへども。天は左（ひだり）に旋（めぐ）り。地はまた右（みぎ）に旋（めぐ）りて止（や）まず譬（たと）へば
人（ひと）船中（ふねのなか）に在（あ）りて窓（まど）を閉（とぢ）て座（ざ）すれば。其（その）船（ふね）のおのづから
行（ゆく）をしらざるが如（ごと）し。この故（ゆへ）に天（てん）も動（うこ）き地（き）もまた循（じゆん）【左ルビ「めくり」】
現代語訳
やって来て、その一言をこの巻の初めに書いてよいと言う。いともつまらないただの言葉ではあるが、求められるままに筆を取るものは洛下隠士何某である。

そもそも「地」という文字は、昔は「埊」と書いた。これは会意文字である。史記や漢書では「墜」と書く。「震」は動くという意味であり、また怒るという意味でもある。天は動いて四季を作り、地は静かにして万物を養う。しかしながら、天は左に回り、地もまた右に回って止まない。例えば人が船の中にいて窓を閉めて座っていれば、その船が自然に進んでいることを知らないようなものである。この故に天も動き、地もまた巡っている。

A visitor came and said to write that one word at the beginning of this volume. Though these are trivial words of no importance, I take up my brush as requested. The writer is a hermit of Rakuka (Kyoto), whose name is withheld.

Now, the character for "earth" (地) was written as "埊" in ancient times. This is a compound ideograph. In the Records of the Grand Historian (Shiji) and the Book of Han, it is written as "墜" (fall/drop). "Shin" (震, earthquake) means movement, and also means anger. Heaven moves to create the four seasons, while earth remains still to nurture all things. However, heaven revolves to the left, and earth also revolves to the right without stopping. It is like a person sitting in a ship with closed windows, unaware that the ship is naturally moving forward. For this reason, heaven moves and earth also cycles.
