井戸（ゐと）涸（か）れ時候（しこう）ことの外｜熱気（あたゝかき）なり。これを譬（たと）はゞ。餅（もち）を
炙（あぶ）るに火（ひ）のために脹（ふく）れ起（おこ）るが如（ごと）し将（まさ）に地（ち）震（ふる）ふときは。
蒼天（てん）も卑（ひき）くなり。衆星（ほし）も大（おほき）さ常（つね）に倍（ばい）するといへり。これ
地（ち）昇（のぼ）り天（てん）降（くだ）るにあらず。既（すで）に雨（あめ）ふらんとするときは。山（やま）を
見るに甚（はなは）だ近（ちか）く見るが如（ごと）し。陽気（やうき）陰（いん）を伏（ふく）し地（ち）を裂（さき）て
天（てん）に発（はつ）出するが故に。地中（ちちう）震動（しんどう）すこれ則ち地震（ぢしん）
なり。其（その）はじめ震（ふる）ふもの甚（はなは）だ猛烈（もうれつ）なり。これ地中（ちのしたの）
陽気（やうき）一塊（ひとかたまり）に発（はつ）するの証（しるし）なり。また次に震（ふる）ふものは
緩（ゆるやか）なり。これ嚮（さき）の陽気（やうき）｜地中（ちちう）に残（のこ）れるが少（すこ）しづゝ発出（はつしゆつ）
の所以（いはれ）なり。されば一天中（いつてんちう）の世界（せかい）なれども。中華（もろこし）に
ふるひて本朝（わかてう）に動（うご）かず。日本（につほん）震（ふる）ひて唐土（から）また動（うご）
かず。一国中（いつこくちう）にかぎり他国（たこく）に出でず。或（あるひ）は江戸（えど）静（しづか）にして
浪花（なには）に震（ふる）ひ。大坂（おほさか）豊（ゆたか）にして京都（きやうとう）うごく。是（これ）地中（ちちう）の陽（やう）
にて地（ち）脹（ふく）るゝと脹（ふくれ）ざるとの故なり。地中（ちちう）に凝（こり）し陽気（やうき）

現代語訳
井戸が涸れ、季節外れの異常な暖かさとなる。これを例えるならば、餅を炙るときに火の熱で膨れ上がるようなものである。まさに地が震えようとするときは、大空も低くなり、星々もその大きさが普段の倍になると言われている。これは地が上昇し天が降りてくるのではなく、ちょうど雨が降ろうとするときに、山を見るとひどく近くに見えるのと同じである。陽気が陰を押し伏せ、地を裂いて天へと噴き出すがゆえに、地中が震動する。これすなわち地震である。その最初の揺れは非常に激しい。これは地中の陽気が一塊となって発出する証（しるし）である。また、その次に続く揺れは緩やかである。これは、先の陽気が地中に残っているものが少しずつ発出するわけである。
それゆえ、同じ一つの天の下の世界であっても、中国（もろこし）で震えて日本では動かないことがあり、日本で震えて中国では動かないことがある。一国の中に限り、他国には及ばないこともある。あるいは江戸が静かであって大坂（浪花）で震え、大坂が安泰であって京都が動くこともある。これは地中の陽気によって地が膨れるところと膨れないところがあるためである。地中に凝り固まった陽気がその場所から発出しようとするがゆえに、甚だしい場合には地が裂け、山が崩れることがしばしばある。一村の中でもそのあたりの（陽気の）多少によって…

Wells dry up, and the weather becomes unusually warm beyond what the season would call for. To use an analogy, it is like a rice cake (*mochi*) swelling up when heated over a fire. Just when the earth is about to tremble, it is said that the sky appears lower than usual and the stars appear twice their normal size. This is not because the earth is rising and the sky is descending; rather, it is like how, just before rain falls, mountains appear much closer than they actually are. Because yang energy (*yōki*) subdues the yin, splits the earth open, and bursts forth toward the heavens, the ground beneath shakes. This is precisely what an earthquake is. The initial shaking is extremely violent. This is the sign that the yang energy within the earth is bursting forth all at once. The subsequent tremors that follow are gentler. This is because the yang energy that previously remained in the earth is escaping little by little.
For this reason, even though all lands exist beneath the same sky, it may tremble in China (*Morokoshi*) and yet not move in Japan, or tremble in Japan and yet not move in China. It may be confined to within a single country without spreading to other lands. Or it may be that Edo is calm while Osaka (Naniwa) trembles, or that Osaka is at peace while Kyoto moves. This is due to the yang energy within the earth, and whether or not the ground swells in a given place. Because the yang energy that has congealed within the earth in a particular location seeks to burst forth from that spot, in severe cases the earth cracks and mountains collapse — occurrences that happen from time to time.
