Having lost their banner, they had no guide to show them where to go and fled in panic and confusion. When they tried to head toward Mozawa, the ferry crossing was guarded by over a thousand people from the villages under Yoda's command, who had lit bonfires making it as bright as day. When they tried to cross the rapids at Ōtani, it was blocked by forces from Shiokawa. When they tried to hide in the valleys below the rocks of Ōtani, fifteen men from Ueda had removed the sheaths from their spears and were stationed here and there. Caught in heaven's net, the long night passed heartlessly, and when dawn broke and they looked around, To the west were Ueda's pursuit forces, to the east were Komoro's capture forces, to the north were Nezu and Yazawa, and to the south, with the great river at their backs, village forces stood ready like clouds and mist. With advance and retreat thus blocked, while they wondered what to do, the various samurai quickly pressed forward, driving them here and cornering them there to capture them alive. However, the number of those who slipped through here, escaped there, and finally got away is unknown. Though it was heard that there were over two thousand in the evening, only about two hundred were reportedly captured at the four locations. Three bandits fled in all directions toward Shimagawara.
