(金銀が)尽き果て、借金や援助なども一切なく、家財や田畑をも打ち捨て、老いた母や幼い子を捨てて、わが身を隠したものは数え切れないほどであった。
ただ、小諸御城主は世にも優れて民を憐れむ御恵みが深いことをかすかに聞き及んでいた。このような明君の下に住み暮らす人々はなんとも羨ましい。我々が住む里は御上の政事においても何事もうまくいかない。悲しいことである。まことに陰徳ある者には必ず陽報あり、と言われるとおりである。
ここにまた、小諸牧野公の御領分の中で、名にし負う望月という所に、中国の唐夫人にも劣らぬ孝行な婦人がいた。昔の望月の古城主の家臣、春原何某の末裔で、新左衛門という者の妻であったが、その辺りに住む寄人(よりゅうど)がその心を乱し惑わせて、秋の詠として詠じられた。

Only the lord of Komoro Castle was known, even if faintly, for his deep compassion and benevolence toward the people, surpassing all others. How enviable are those who live under such an enlightened ruler. The village where we live fares poorly in every matter of governance. How lamentable. Truly, as it is said, those who accumulate hidden virtue will surely receive their reward in the open.
Here again, in the domain of Lord Makino of Komoro, in a place called Mochizuki, renowned for its name, there lived a filial wife who was no less virtuous than the legendary Lady Tang of China. She was a descendant of a retainer named Sunohara something-or-other, who served the former lord of the ancient Mochizuki Castle, and had become the wife of a man named Shinzaemon.
