且暮の方便尽て秋の初妻には娘を添
て和気の別れして己は家に有て木の実
草の葉抔を取て糧（カテ）となすもはてなくに
他に食を乞んと霜降月の始-吟（サマ）ひ出し
が元来其身病ひ有に痛てや帰り来ず
稚き子の祖母を養ふ事難く食尽
たり妻は古郷に漸弟壱人り有是も
貧く人有て再嫁お進むれ共両夫を
求す一日〳〵と他に雇われて暮しぬるに去れし
家の 姑（シウトメ）飢に苦￣ムを傳聞て防（トムラ）ひ来見て泪を流
し急き立帰り此日他に雇れ聊か得たる賃
米をもつて懇にやしなひ昼は終日野に出山に
入草木の根抔堀得て夕べには家に帰り盲母に
仕る事妻侍董永かつまといふ共おさ〳〵及ぶべ
からず寔に過し年此邊り皆夏秋の作 登（みの）ら
す民の苦む事いふべからず然るに

（妻は）秋の初めに、娘を連れて穏やかに別れを告げて（実家へ戻り）、夫は家に残って木の実や草の葉などを糧として生き延びようとしたが、それも続かなくなり、他所で食を乞おうと霜月の初めに出かけて行った。しかし、もともと病を抱えていたため、苦しんでそのまま帰って来なかった。幼い子どもたちが盲目の祖母を養うことは難しく、食べ物も尽きてしまった。妻は故郷になんとか弟が一人いたが、その弟も貧しく、周りの人々が再嫁を勧めても、二人の夫を持つことを良しとせず、日々他所へ雇われて暮らしていた。ところが、去って行った家の姑（しゅうとめ）が飢えに苦しんでいると伝え聞いて、訪ねて来て涙を流し、急いで帰り、その日他所で雇われてわずかに得た賃米を持って、心を込めて（姑を）養い、昼は一日中野に出て山に入り、草木の根などを掘り求めて、夕べには家に帰り、盲目の母（姑）に仕えることは、（孝行の鑑として名高い）董永の妻といえども、とうてい及ぶものではなかった。まことに、ここ数年この辺り一帯では夏も秋も作物が実らず、民が苦しむことは言葉に尽くし難い。しかるに（以下次ページへ続く）。

At the beginning of autumn, (the wife) parted amicably with her husband, taking their daughter with her (to her parents' home), while the husband remained at home, trying to sustain himself on nuts and leaves from the forest. When even this could no longer provide enough, he set out at the beginning of the frost month (tenth month) to beg for food elsewhere. However, as he had long been afflicted with illness, he suffered greatly and never returned home. The young children found it difficult to care for their blind grandmother, and their food supply was exhausted. The wife had but one younger brother in her hometown, though he too was poor. Although those around her urged her to remarry, she refused to take a second husband and made her living day by day by hiring herself out to others. Then, hearing that the mother-in-law of the household she had left behind was suffering from starvation, she came to visit, shed tears at the sight, and hurried back. With the meager rice she had earned that very day working for others, she tenderly cared for her mother-in-law. During the days she would go out into the fields and mountains from morning till night, digging up roots of plants and grasses, and in the evenings she would return home to serve her blind mother-in-law. Her devotion was such that even the wife of Tō Ei (Dong Yong), celebrated in legend for her filial piety, could scarcely compare. Truly, for the past several years in this region, crops had failed to ripen in both summer and autumn, and the suffering of the people was beyond words. And yet... (continued on the next page).
