けれは唐松を横切に柏木村へぞ迎ける先柏
木村穀商人新五郎同左太夫潰之小山
又四郎といふ有徳成人の宅に乱入しかば是も
焚出し用意して振舞書付等ヲ望に任決
認め出す其内に大勢 篁（タカムロ）に乱入竹壱本づゝ
伐取て皆々杖に突是ゟ上州大竹組とぞ
号しける然処に如何の事にや牧野大君の御上
聞に達しければ諸方の百姓共飢に忍ず竭故に
及ふに寄餘義なく相働に至るの条不便成事なれは
必以此方にて相防に不及譬領内の百姓幷に
城下の町人たり共穀物を買締己の利欲にふけり
世の難義を-顧（カヘリミ）ぬ科有故潰すならんさすれは
一切不可指構食事抔与へ心能可通と以の外
成御城意にて残念なから与良口の出張を引セ
られ大手をぞ固めらる依之騒動共心安く城
下へ入込飯抔酒抔思ひのまゝ打喰ひ肩いからして

現代語訳

そこで唐松を横切りして柏木村へと向かった。まず柏木村の穀物商人新五郎、同じく左太夫、潰之小山又四郎という裕福な人の家に乱入したところ、彼らも炊き出しの用意をして振る舞い、要求された書付なども望み通りに書いて差し出した。その間に大勢が竹藪に乱入して竹を一本ずつ伐り取り、皆が杖として突いた。これより「上州大竹組」と名乗るようになった。

ところがどういうわけか、牧野大君の御上聞に達したので、「諸方の百姓共が飢えに耐えかねて困窮しているがゆえに、やむを得ずこのような行動に至っているのは気の毒なことである。必ずしもこちらで防ぐには及ばない。たとえ領内の百姓並びに城下の町人であっても、穀物を買い占めて自分の利欲にふけり、世の中の困窮を顧みない罪があるゆえに打ち壊すのであろう。それならば一切構わず、食事なども与えて親切に通すべきである」という、意外な御城意であったため、残念ながら与良口の出張を引き上げられ、大手門を固めることとなった。

So they crossed through Karamatsu and headed toward Kashiwagi village. First, they broke into the homes of wealthy grain merchants in Kashiwagi village - Shingoro, Sadayu of the same trade, and Matashiro of Tsubushi-no-Oyama. These merchants also prepared food distributions and wrote out whatever documents were demanded of them, submitting them as requested. Meanwhile, a large crowd broke into a bamboo grove and cut down bamboo stalks one by one, which everyone used as walking sticks. From this point on, they called themselves the "Joshu Otake-gumi" (Joshu Great Bamboo Group).

However, for some reason this matter reached the attention of Lord Makino, who declared: "The peasants from various regions are suffering from hunger and destitution, and have been driven to these actions out of desperation - this is a pitiable situation. We need not necessarily prevent them. Even if they are peasants from within our domain or townspeople from the castle town, if they have committed the crime of hoarding grain for their own profit while ignoring the hardships of the world, then it is understandable that their properties would be attacked. Therefore, we should not interfere at all, but rather provide them with food and treat them kindly." This was such an unexpected castle policy that, regrettably, the deployment at Yora-guchi was withdrawn and they were ordered to guard the main gate instead.

As a result, the rioters entered the castle town with peace of mind, eating rice and drinking sake as they pleased, swaggering with pride.
