現代語訳
（暴徒たちが）通り過ぎていくのを、若い侍たちが忍び出てこれを見て、打ち散らしてやろうとざわめいたが、御上意に背くことはできず、胸を押さえて控えていた。賊徒がいよいよ新町を出たところで、若い侍が一人忍び出て鉄砲を放ったところ、皆があわてふためいて立ち上がり、新張（陣屋）を蹴り倒して逃げ去った。
城下の隠士が、李白の「烏夜啼」の詩に擬して、次のように詠じた。
破屋臺（はやたい） 利惑（りわく）
小諸城辺、冦（かたき）入らんと欲す
役者、冠（かぶり）を棹（ふ）って、町を隔てて固む
独り鉄炮を放てば、逃るること雨の如し
帰り飛んで、市上に立つ
騎を留めて、千に当たり、遠人を威す
騒動の者どもは程なく新張（陣屋）へ早々と押し寄せた。夜に紛れてまた賊徒共が諸方より駆け集まり、殊のほか大勢となった。

As the rioters passed through, young samurai slipped out to watch and clamored to drive them away, but unable to defy their lord's command, they held back and restrained themselves. When the rioters finally left Shinmachi, one young samurai slipped out and fired a gun. At this, everyone panicked and leapt up, kicking over the field encampments and fleeing.
A reclusive scholar in the castle town composed the following verse, modeled after Li Bai's poem "Wuye Ti" (Crows Crying at Night):
"Hayatai" (Broken-down Stage) "Riwaku" (Profit and Confusion)
By the walls of Komoro Castle, the enemies seek to enter;
The actors, waving their headgear, fortify the town from across the way;
One man fires a gun — they flee like rain scattering.
Turning back, they stand in the marketplace;
Reining in their horses, they stand firm against thousands, intimidating those from afar.
Before long, the rioters pressed forward again toward the field encampments. Under cover of night, rioters gathered again from all directions, swelling into an exceptionally large crowd.
Now, the sake merchant Shoryuemon was a man of notable wealth and stature. His main residence, tenements, and even his outhouse were constructed entirely of earthen storehouse-style (fireproof) architecture, and his reception rooms were appointed with every luxury. Hearing that the rioters were coming, he summoned the young men who frequented his establishment from the neighborhood, assembled a large group, and placed them on the rooftops...
