大こく天の仰にまかせむすこ七才より

今まで金銀でなければ世は

現代語訳
大黒天の仰せに任せ、息子七歳より『孝経』『大学』を読ませて、前もそばにて商売の学問。今まではわればかり良かれと思っていたのを、われよりも人を良かれと思う。
今まで金銀でなければ世は渡れぬものと思い、とかく銭を儲けて儲けてと、自分が釜の下の用心ばかりしているを得のように思ったが、それは一旦の利潤にて、ついには滅ぶるぞと大神宮様も御戒めなされ、また聖人も「宝栄えているときは栄えて出る」と教えを垂れた。なんと結構なことか。
新右衛門は息子があまり学問なれば、唐詩選とやらを書いた扇などは読むことも叶わねど、手前の身を修めることは呑み込み、その上犬猫鳶烏の心つきまで承知すれば、島屋の隠居の跡継ぎと世間でも用いられけるほどに、息子は学問する上にそれを見習い、上々の人となりそうなれば、夫婦の喜び、これも大黒様の御告げといつもよりもまた目出たく春を迎えけり。

Following Daikokuten's divine instruction, from when his son was seven years old, he had him read the "Classic of Filial Piety" and the "Great Learning," while he himself studied the learning of commerce alongside. Until now he had thought only of his own benefit, but now he thinks of benefiting others rather than himself.
Until now he thought the world could not be navigated without gold and silver, and focused only on making money, making money, thinking it profitable to worry only about the fire under his own pot. But this is only temporary profit that will ultimately lead to ruin, as Daijingu-sama has warned, and the sages have taught that "when treasures flourish, they flourish and then decline." How excellent this is!
Though Shinemon's son became so learned that he could not even read fans inscribed with Chinese poetry selections, he comprehended how to cultivate himself, and moreover understood even the nature of dogs, cats, hawks, and crows. Thus he was employed by society as successor to the retired master of Shimaya. Since his son not only pursued learning but also followed his example and seemed likely to become a person of high standing, the couple's joy - this too being Daikokuten's divine revelation - welcomed spring even more auspiciously than usual.
