になることを見きゝしやつたが

かないのものにもきかせろさ

天か下のみたまものとあれば天
地のれいぶつじやよつてしやうを

くするとそいつにとりけだものより
はるかにをとつたやつがある神なる

心のおき所がちがふたゆへまもるべき
どうりなしその中におぬしなどは

心やすくするじやよくかんがへてみ
やれとりけだ物にわうちやくものは
なしいづれも正ぢきわがしやうを

もの人はやゝもすればおれは正直でござる
といふ正直といふは人のもちまへなんの

だか正直一へんですんだからいゝがとり
けだ物も今いふとをり正直それで

現代語訳
新右衛門がすたすたと家に帰ると、家内の喜びは大方ならず。さて夕飯を食べ終わると、大黒天が少しお待ちかねと見えて、のさのさと座敷へ現れ出でられた。
「さて新右衛門、お前は今度は面白い心得になることを見聞きしたようだが、何でも同じ理屈だ。話して聞かせよう。遠慮なしに家内の者にも聞かせろ。
さて、少し高慢臭いが、それ人は天下の御霊物とあれば、天地の霊物じゃ。よって生を保つ者の総御頭だが、悪くするとそいつに取り、獣よりはるかに劣った奴がある。神なるまでも不憫に思えども、己が心の置き所が違ったゆえ、守るべき道理なし。その中にお前などは、よく天下の掟を守り、家を大切にして先祖の孝を知るは良いことに違いなきゆえ、我々もかく心安くするのじゃ。よく考えてみよ。
鳥獣に我欲着の者はなし。いずれも正直、我が生を愛するのみなれば、食うことにばかりかけ回りける。これが彼らが道というもの。人はややもすれば『俺は正直でござる』という。正直というは人の持ち前、何の味噌を上げることがあるものか。不正直と比べ物にするから道を取り違える。
お前はあまり物を読まぬそうだが、正直一辺で済んだから良いが、鳥獣も今言う通り正直、それでは人間の詮がない。とかく息子には読ませて、人の道あることを教えやれ。
よく言うことだが、本を読むと高慢だの、知ったかぶりだのというが、そのようなものは口元ばかりの学問。しかしながら物を読んでその先ばかり詮索するは、せぬに劣る。とかく身の行いを良くするが、一冊でも読んだ詮というものだ。
人には上下の差別はありといえど、心に上下はなし。下々の者ながらもよく道を守るを人の人というもの。身の行い悪い奴は、わんわんにゃあにゃあと言うと同じことだ。これはまあ大筋の話。
とかく学ばねば。俺は今までこんなことを言ったことはないが、お前が世間を良くせんと俺を頼みやる心志、親たる者の道にかなうゆえ、よんどころなく口不調法ながら長々と言ったが、必ず必ず世間へは沙汰なしにせよ」
【新右衛門ひれ伏して】
「重ね重ねありがたく存じます。友とも、また有難うございます」
【大黒天】
「とかく読ませやれ。読むに越えた宝は俺も持たぬ。銭金は脇物、ちっと脇がねるが、まず脇物にもし分からずば、その時は友とも、商売はさ」

When Shinemon returned home briskly, his family's joy was beyond measure. After finishing his evening meal, Daikokuten appeared, seeming to have been waiting impatiently, emerging slowly into the sitting room.
"Now, Shinemon, you seem to have seen and heard something that gave you an interesting understanding this time, but it's all the same principle. Let me tell you about it. Without reserve, let your household hear this too.
Now, this may sound a bit arrogant, but humans are divine beings of the heavens and earth, spiritual creatures indeed. Therefore, they are the chief among all living beings, but when corrupted, some become far inferior to beasts. Even we gods feel pity for them, but because their hearts are wrongly placed, there is no principle by which to protect them. Among them, you and others who properly observe the laws of the realm, cherish your homes, and know filial piety toward ancestors - this is undoubtedly good, which is why we can be at ease with you. Think carefully about this.
No bird or beast has selfish desires. All are honest, loving only their own lives, and thus run around only seeking food. This is what they call their way. Humans are quick to say 'I am honest.' Honesty is human nature - what is there to boast about? Because they compare it with dishonesty, they mistake the true path.
You apparently don't read much, but since you've managed with honesty alone, that's fine. Birds and beasts are honest as I just said, but if that's all humans have, there's no point to being human. Make sure your son reads and teach him that humans have their own way.
People often say that reading makes one arrogant or pretentious, but such people have only superficial learning. However, reading only to nitpick details is worse than not reading at all. The point of reading even one book is to improve one's conduct.
Though people have social distinctions of high and low, hearts have no such distinctions. Even those of humble station who properly follow the way are truly human. Those with bad conduct are the same as saying 'woof woof' or 'meow meow.' This is the general outline.
You must learn. I have never spoken of such things before, but because your intention to improve society by relying on me accords with the way of a parent, I had no choice but to speak at length despite my poor eloquence. But absolutely, absolutely keep this from becoming public gossip."
