現代語訳
ここに島屋仙右衛門という者がいて、正直一辺倒に商売を心がけ、その身が六十歳を超える頃には、人も知る金持ちとなった。商売を息子に譲り、名を学人と改めて楽な身分となると、近所の子供を集めて忠孝の道と一生の心構えを身近に話した。
「先祖の恩は富士山を目の下に見るほど高く、母の恩は龍宮の堀よりも深い。主従の縁は四世にわたる契りなので、おろそかになどできようか」と優しく教える。その上、男は家を保ち、女は夫をはじめ舅・姑への仕え方まで、一つ一つ例えを用いて道を示したので、子供の行儀も目立つほどよくなった。
後には子供より親父が夜這いをかけられ、我も我もと詰めかけ、ありがたい話を口数少なく言って、日々に聞くことが面白く、少しの怠慢もできなくなったのも当然である。
元来この隠居は商人であるから、相手の気持ちを承知して、二十文で売る物は十九文、四十文の物は三十八文と値引きする心地の所へかかって、お釈迦様でも孔子様でも及ばない即座即効の教え方は、やわらかさ八人前の格言の上を行った手回しの良さは、やわらかさ千人前である。
これを聞いて後、道のあることを知って学問を始めて、大極上々吉の人となった者の数を知らず、隠居の喜びが限りなければ、またその元は隠居の陰徳を喜ぶのである。

Here lived a man named Shimaya Senzaemon who devoted himself entirely to honest business practices. By the time he reached his sixties, he had become a well-known wealthy man. After passing his business to his son and changing his name to Gakujin, he entered a life of leisure and began gathering neighborhood children to teach them about filial piety and proper life conduct.
He would gently instruct them: "The debt to our ancestors is as high as Mount Fuji seen below one's feet, a mother's kindness is deeper than the moats of the Dragon Palace, and the bond between master and servant is a covenant lasting four generations—how could we treat such things carelessly?" Furthermore, he taught that men must maintain their households while women must serve their husbands, fathers-in-law, and mothers-in-law, using specific examples to guide them on the proper path. As a result, the children's behavior improved remarkably.
Eventually, even the fathers came calling more eagerly than their children, all crowding around to hear his precious words spoken with few but meaningful phrases. Daily listening became so enjoyable that even the slightest negligence became impossible.
Originally being a merchant, this retired man understood people's hearts, offering items that cost twenty mon for nineteen mon, and forty-mon items for thirty-eight mon. His immediate and effective teaching method surpassed even the Buddha or Confucius. His gentle approach, eight times more refined than typical moral instruction, and his skillful handling, a thousand times more gentle, were truly exceptional.
After hearing his teachings, countless people discovered the way of righteousness, began their studies, and became persons of the highest moral character. The retired man's joy knew no bounds, for it stemmed from the pleasure others took in his virtuous influence.
