蓼（たで）くふ虫（むし）もすき〴〵のみちは馬鹿（ばか）〳〵しいと二三年
やめた所（ところ）へ蔦重（つたじう）が憑（たのみ）に例（れい）の教訓異見（きゃうくんいけん）の
うつとうしいも随分承知之助（すいぶんしやうちのすけ）と板元（はんもと）のほう
からしやれかけるをどつこいそこを虎（とら）の皮（かは）千里（せんり）
も走（はし）る大ぼやむきの趣向（しゆこう）にせず意地（いぢ）にかゝつて
しやつきばりいつもの癖（くせ）の十 割（わり）ましたつた一つ
の心当（こゝろあて）第（だい）一の得意（とくゐ）は御子様（おこさま）がたへ御祖父（おぢい）さん御

現代語訳
序
「蓼食う虫も好き好き」の道は馬鹿馬鹿しいと二、三年やめていたところ、蔦重が依頼してきて、例の教訓・意見のうっとうしいものも「十分承知の助」と版元の方から洒落をかけてくるのを、「どっこい、そこを虎の皮を着て千里も走る」大法螺吹きの趣向にはせず、意地になってしゃっきりと、いつもの癖で十割増しした、たった一つの心当て。第一の得意は、お子様方へお祖父さん、おばあさんがお土産に持参し、読み聞かせに金のかからないところを売りにして、通笑自ら述べる。

Preface
Having quit the path of "different strokes for different folks" for two or three years, thinking it foolish, Tsutaju came with a request. When the publisher jokingly suggested that the usual tedious moral lessons and advice would be "perfectly fine by him," I stubbornly refused to make it into the kind of boastful scheme where one "runs a thousand ri wearing a tiger's skin." Instead, with my usual habit of going ten percent overboard, I had just one idea in mind. My greatest specialty is creating something that grandfathers and grandmothers can bring as gifts to children, something that costs nothing for reading aloud together. This Tsūshō himself relates.
