蓼（たで）くふ虫（むし）もすき〴〵のみちは馬鹿（ばか）〳〵しいと二三年
やめた所（ところ）へ蔦重（つたじう）が憑（たのみ）に例（れい）の教訓異見（きゃうくんいけん）の
うつとうしいも随分承知之助（すいぶんしやうちのすけ）と板元（はんもと）のほう
からしやれかけるをどつこいそこを虎（とら）の皮（かは）千里（せんり）
も走（はし）る大ぼや#1むきの趣向（しゆこう）にせず意地（いぢ）にかゝつて
しやつきばりいつもの癖（くせ）の十 割（わり）ましたつた一つ

現代語訳
序文
「蓼食う虫も好き好き」というように、馬鹿馬鹿しいと思って二、三年やめていたところへ、蔦重（蔦屋重三郎）が頼みに来た。例の教訓・意見（忠告）のうっとうしいことも「十分承知之助」と、版元の方からしゃれをかけてくるのを、「どっこい、そうはいかぬ」と虎の皮（千里も走る）のような大げさな向きの趣向にはせず、意地を張って突っ張り、いつもの癖で十割増し、ただ一つの心当たり、第一の得意は、お子様方へお祖父さん・お祖母さんのお土産に持ってゆき、差し障り・禁じ物のないところを拠り所として、通笑みずから述べる。

Preface
As the saying goes, "Even insects that eat knotweed have their preferences" — thinking the whole business foolish, I had set it aside for two or three years, when Tsutajū (Tsutaya Jūzaburō) came to me with a request. "I am fully aware," said I — playing along with the publisher's little wordplay on the tiresome matter of moral instruction and advice — yet I would not be swayed: "Not so fast!" Rather than taking the grand, showy approach like a tiger's pelt that runs a thousand leagues, I dug in my heels with my usual stubbornness, going a full ten measures beyond my usual self. My one sure plan, my greatest strength: a book that grandparents can bring as a souvenir for their grandchildren — something with no objectionable or forbidden content to worry about. So speaks Tsūshō himself.
