申（もふ）されし木曽（きそ）の桟（かけはし）にもおさ〳〵 劣（をと）らぬ難所（なんじよ）
なり靭（うつぼ）は元来（ぐわんらい）十六 条（すじ）の矢（や）を挿（はさ）み右（みき）の肩（かた）へ
背負（せお）ふ物（もの）なるか昔（むかし）或（ある）武将（ぶしやう）此（この）所（ところ）へ来掛（きかゝ）りし
時（とき）岩石（がんせき）に靭（うつぼ）を支（さゝ）へられて通（とを）るを得（え）す因（より）て

○福渡戸（ふくわた） 入口（いりくち）の畑中（はたなか）に二（ふたつ）の浴槽（ゆふね）あり此処（こゝ）
に行在所（あんざいしよ）新営（しんえい）の挙（きよ）あるやに聞及（きゝおよｂ）へり川（かは）の
向（むか）ふなる岩窟（がんくつ）より湧出（わきいづ）るは岩（いは）の湯（ゆ）也（なり）手前（てまへ）
なるは冷湯（ひへのゆ）。淡湯（あはのゆ）。裸湯（はたかゆ）。合（あは）せて四坪（よつぼ）あり功能（こうのう）

現代語訳
申されし木曽の桟橋にも決して劣らない難所である。靭は本来十六条の矢を挿み、右の肩へ背負う物であるが、昔ある武将がこの所へ来かかった時、岩石に靭を支えられて通ることができず、そこで靭を左の肩へ直し、辛うじて通ったゆえに左靭と唱えたということである。今塩原に遊ぶ者は駕籠に乗り車を走らせてこのような艱難を知らないので、少し書いて往時の面影を残しておく。
○福渡戸 入口の畑中に二つの浴槽がある。ここに行在所新営の計画があるやに聞き及んでいる。川の向こうにある岩窟より湧き出るのは岩の湯である。手前にあるのは冷湯、淡湯、裸湯で、合わせて四坪ある。効能の概略は巻末に掲げてあるので一覧の上入浴すべきである。当所は物品を商う家はなく客楼のみで、槙野屋、坂口屋、吉野屋、玉屋、松屋、和泉屋、叶屋、丸屋、升屋、山形屋、磯屋の十一戸である。

This is a treacherous spot that is in no way inferior to the famous Kiso suspension bridge mentioned by the master. Originally, a quiver (utsubo) is meant to hold sixteen arrows and be carried on the right shoulder, but long ago when a certain military commander came to this place, his quiver got caught on the rocks and he could not pass through. Therefore, he shifted the quiver to his left shoulder and barely managed to get through, which is why it came to be called "Left Quiver" (Hidari-utsubo). Today, those who visit Shiobara travel in palanquins and carriages and know nothing of such hardships, so I write this down briefly to preserve the vestiges of bygone days.
○Fukuwatado: There are two bathing pools in the fields at the entrance. I have heard that there are plans to build a temporary imperial residence here. What springs forth from the rock cave across the river is Iwa-no-yu (Rock Hot Spring). On this side are the cold bath, light bath, and bare bath, totaling four tsubo in area. The general outline of their medicinal properties is listed at the end of the volume, so one should consult it before bathing. This place has no shops selling goods, only inns: Makinoya, Sakaguchiya, Yoshinoya, Tamaya, Matsuya, Izumiya, Kanauya, Maruya, Masuya, Yamagataya, and Isoya—eleven establishments in total.
