○ Recently, various newspapers have reported on the state of affairs here, noting that prices are high. This, however, is a case of knowing one thing but not two. Since Ikaho is a secluded place in the mountains, there is little farmland, and not only grains and vegetables, but virtually every daily necessity must be imported from elsewhere. Moreover, since the roads are steep and rugged, transportation costs are several times higher than in flat areas, which is why the base prices are high. Yet visitors to the baths simply assume that the people of Ikaho are taking excessive profits — this is a mistaken impression. For this reason, the merchants have now formed an alliance and cooperative association, and have established a means of lowering base prices. Therefore, guests coming to take the waters need not bring excess baggage or supplies with them.
