●四日市町の地震 このころ各地方から地震を報告するものが多く、毎夜東南の空に激しい電光が閃くのを見ていたことから、安政大地震からちょうど三廻り、すなわち三十七年目にあたるとして、人々は変災が起こるのではないかと心配していた。折しも二十八日午前六時三十六分頃、突然大地震が起こった。震動時間は七分、方位は北東で、その後も小震が止まなかった。家屋の全壊は十七戸、半壊九戸、土蔵および人家の庇が落ちたものが十九箇所、堤防の破壊十箇所、各工場の煙突はおおかた倒れた。人畜の死傷があったが、いまだ詳しくはわからない。波止場近辺には地の裂けた箇所もあり、当港から熱田へ航行していた汽船は、海岸が崩壊したため乗客を上陸させることができず、そのまま当港へ引き返した。また、震動が最も激しかったとき、空を飛ぶ鳥はことごとく地に落ち、水中の魚は多く水の上に飛び出した。
●桑名町の地震 桑名町市中の被害の様子を二、三記しておくと、最も惨状を極めたのは大字殿町の、俗に裏殿町と呼ばれる場所で、同所の家屋十九戸が一列に倒壊した。しかし幸いにして人畜の被害は少なく、負傷者が四名あったのみである。その他の倒壊家屋も二十戸ほどあり、倒れた劇場は「七實座」というところで、寺院・神社・土蔵等の瓦が落ち、庇が飛び、半壊となったものが数箇所あったが、負傷者は割合に少なく、殿町分を合わせても十人ほどに止まったであろう。しかし、新埋立地は一般に災害が多く、地盤の裂けた箇所が多かった。桑名郡各村落のうち七取村では、人家・寺院の倒れたものが多かったのみならず、香取の堤防はおよそ五十間ほどが水面と同じ高さまで地下に沈み、楠村内の木曽川筋の堤防は四尺ほどが数十町の間にわたって同じく地下に陥没し、そのために数十戸の家屋が倒れ、小学校もまた潰れた。深谷村では倒壊家屋一戸、死者一名。赤須賀村にも倒壊家屋四戸、半壊十四戸があったと聞く。
●奈良町の地震 奈良町では二十八日午前六時三十七分頃に地震があった。同町における被害の概略を挙げれば、家屋十戸、門三箇所、土塀十三箇所、春日神社の石燈籠二百十三基、その他社寺の石燈籠三十余基、いずれも顛倒した。大仏仁王門の柱三基が東方へ九寸余傾斜した。三条停車場の西手・字高橋東手の土地がおよそ二十間ほど裂け、郡山町においては尋常小学校教場のほかに家屋十六戸が顛倒・半壊し、墻壁等の大破箇所がおよそ二百五十箇所、女児一名が即死した。葛下郡内にて人家一戸が顛倒、その他高田・五條等も被害が少なからず、目下取り調べ中。下市方面では人々がいずれも山へ駆け上がって難を避けた。殊に猿沢池畔の五重塔が東にゆらり、西にゆらりと揺れ、猿沢池の中の鯉が数多く群れをなして路上に跳ね上がった様子は、また一（つの壮観であった）。

●The Earthquake at Yokkaichi Town Around this time, many reports of earthquakes were coming in from various regions, and people had been observing intense lightning flashing in the southeastern sky every night. As this was the thirty-seventh year — exactly three cycles — since the great Ansei Earthquake, people had been anxious that some calamity might occur. It was precisely at around 6:36 a.m. on the 28th that a great earthquake suddenly struck. The duration of the tremor was seven minutes, its direction was northeast, and small tremors continued unabated thereafter. Seventeen houses were completely destroyed, nine partially destroyed, nineteen locations had eaves fall from storehouses and dwellings, ten locations had damaged embankments, and the chimneys of most factories collapsed. There were casualties among people and livestock, though details remained unclear. Near the harbor, the ground cracked in some places, and a steamship that had been sailing from the port toward Atsuta was unable to land its passengers due to the collapse of the coastline, and returned to port as it was. Furthermore, at the height of the tremors, every bird flying in the sky fell to the ground, and many fish in the water leapt out onto the surface.
●The Earthquake at Kuwana Town To note two or three aspects of the damage in Kuwana town, the most devastated area was the place in Ōaza Tonomachi commonly called Ura-Tonomachi, where nineteen houses in a row collapsed. Fortunately, casualties among people and livestock were few, with only four injured persons reported. There were also about twenty other collapsed houses. The theater that fell was one called the "Shichimi-za." Several temples, shrines, and storehouses had tiles fall, eaves fly off, and became half-collapsed, but the number of injured was comparatively small and, including those from Tonomachi, likely amounted to about ten persons in total. However, the newly reclaimed land suffered extensive damage in general, with many areas of ground cracking. In the various villages of Kuwana District, not only were many houses and temples collapsed in the village of Nanato, but approximately fifty ken of the Katori embankment sank underground to the level of the water surface. The embankment along the Kiso River in Kusunoki Village subsided underground by four shaku across a stretch of several tens of chō, causing dozens of houses to collapse, and the elementary school was also destroyed. In Fukatani Village, one house collapsed and one person died. In Akasuka Village as well, it is said that four houses collapsed entirely and fourteen were half-destroyed.
●The Earthquake at Nara Town In Nara Town, an earthquake occurred at around 6:37 a.m. on the 28th. A summary of the damage in the town includes: 10 houses, 3 gates, 13 earthen walls; 213 stone lanterns at the Kasuga Grand Shrine; and over 30 stone lanterns at other shrines and temples — all of which toppled. Three pillars of the Great Buddha's Niō-mon Gate tilted eastward by more than nine sun. The ground cracked for approximately twenty ken in the area west of Sanjō Station and east of the character Takahashi. In Kōryama Town, in addition to the ordinary elementary school building, sixteen houses completely or half-collapsed; approximately 250 locations of walls and fences were heavily damaged; one girl died instantly. In Katsu-ge District, one house collapsed. Other areas including Takada and Gojō also suffered no small amount of damage, and investigations were still ongoing. In the Shimoichi area, people all rushed up into the mountains to escape harm. In particular, the five-story pagoda by Sarusawa Pond swayed east and then west, and the carp in Sarusawa Pond leapt in great numbers onto the road — a spectacle that was yet another (remarkable sight to behold).
