◎震動餘響の現象
今回（こんくわい）の地震に付（つい）ては其影響を受（う）けて冨士浅間 等（とう）にも多少（たせう）の異状ありしなど説（と）くもの
あり其信偽（そのしんぎ）は素（もと）より俄かに判定（はんてい）し難（かた）けれども諸新聞紙の記載（きさい）せる二三の現象を掲（かゝ）く

（前ページより続き）一時の奇観であったという。奈良・大阪間の電信は一時不通となったが、約2時間が経って平常に復した。また振動は翌々日、30日の夜に至っても依然としてまったく止まず、時々小さな揺れがあり、人々はそれぞれ逃げ場所を設け、食料の備蓄をするなど、片時も安心できる状態ではなかったという。
●浜松町の地震
遠州浜松地方では、10月27日の夜から空模様がなんとなく平常と変わり、気候がことのほか温暖で、どうやら異変があるべき気配であったが、果たしてその通り、翌28日午前6時38分頃になって、地下に怪しい鳴動の音が聞こえると思う間もなく大地が揺れ始め、その震動力の強さは驚くべきほどで、二階建ての家などはほとんど軽い小舟に乗って大洋を渡るような思いがしたという。それゆえ、町民の驚愕と狼狽は一方ならず、老人・子供・婦女の手を携えて、転びつまろびつ逃げ迷う様子は、傍から見ても哀れで、一時はいかなる事態に立ち至るやらと、人々は生きた心地がなかった。幸い震動がおよそ3分で静まったため、人々はようやく蘇生の思いをなしたが、この強震のために市中の神社仏閣、その他富裕な家の庭前に据え付けてあった石灯籠は残らず転倒し、陶器店・ガラス屋などでは夥しく売り物を破壊され、紺屋では藍甕の中にあった藍を揺り濁らされた。同町馬込にある藤田栄次郎宅の土蔵および近在の天神町村にある相生学校は全壊となり、伝馬町にある旅館・有年楼と大米屋の二階および三階の欄干はバラバラに外れ、床・壁等の破損が多く、連尺町にある井升屋の三階は4〜5寸も傾き、もう少しで倒れそうになっていた。その他、庇・軒等の傾いたようなものはほとんど数え切れないほどあった。この騒ぎにより、同所の高等尋常小学校は臨時休業となった。
編者注：このほか、激しい地震を感じた地方は、加賀国金沢、越中富山、江州長浜・木の本近傍および愛知県下の岡崎、豊橋等であるが、その状況はいずれも似通ったものであるから、ここではその記事を省略した。
◎震動余響の現象
今回の地震については、その影響を受けて富士浅間等にも多少の異状があったなどと説くものもあり、その真偽はもとより急に判定しがたいが、諸新聞紙に記載された二、三の現象を掲げれば、概ね以下の通りである。
●富士山の崩壊
11月2日、静岡県御厨警察分署の巡査・山下仲次郎氏が、山梨県吉田分署へ窃盗追跡のため出張した途次、富士山頂に異状があるのを認め、直ちに同分署より巡査（以下次ページへ続く）

The tremors continued without fully ceasing even into the night of the 30th, two days later, with occasional small earthquakes occurring intermittently. People each arranged escape routes and stockpiled food, and there was not a single moment of peace of mind, it was said.
●The Earthquake at Hamamatsu
In the Hamamatsu area of Tōtōmi Province, from the night of October 27th, the sky somehow looked different from usual, the weather was unusually warm, and there were signs that some unusual event was about to occur. Sure enough, the following day, the 28th, at around 6:38 in the morning, before one could even register the sound of strange rumbling from underground, the earth began to shake. The force of the tremors was astonishing — those in two-story buildings felt almost as if they were crossing the open ocean in a light, small boat. Naturally, the panic and confusion among the townspeople was beyond measure; the sight of people clutching the hands of the elderly, children, and women, stumbling and tumbling as they fled in all directions, was pitiful to behold even from a distance. For a time, no one knew what catastrophe might be unfolding, and people felt as though they were not among the living. Fortunately, the tremors subsided in approximately three minutes, and people were at last able to feel as though they had come back to life. However, due to this severe earthquake, all the stone lanterns installed in the grounds of shrines, temples, and the gardens of wealthy households throughout the town toppled without exception. Pottery shops and glassware stores suffered enormous damage to their merchandise. At dye shops (indigo-dye establishments), the indigo in the indigo vats was shaken and muddied. The storehouse of Mr. Fujita Eijirō, located in Magome in the same town, and the Aioi School in the nearby village of Tenjinchō, were completely destroyed. At the inn Yūnenrō and the Ōkomeya shop on Tenma-chō, the railings on the second and third floors were shattered into pieces, and there was extensive damage to floors and walls. The third floor of the Imasu-ya store on Renshaku-chō tilted by as much as four to five sun [approximately 12–15 cm], and was on the verge of collapsing. Other cases of tilting eaves, overhanging roofs, and similar damage were nearly too numerous to count. Due to this upheaval, the Higher Elementary School in the area was forced to close temporarily.
Editor's Note: Other areas that experienced severe tremors included Kanazawa in Kaga Province, Toyama in Etchū Province, Nagahama and Kinomoto in Ōmi Province and their vicinities, and Okazaki and Toyohashi in Aichi Prefecture. However, since the conditions in all these places were similar to those already described, the relevant accounts have been omitted here.
◎Phenomena of the Earthquake's Aftereffects
Regarding this earthquake, there are those who claim that its influence caused some degree of unusual activity at Mt. Fuji and the Asama [volcano] and elsewhere. While the truth or falsehood of these claims cannot be readily determined, a few of the phenomena reported in various newspapers are presented below, roughly as follows.
●The Collapse of Mt. Fuji
