●浅間山灰を降らす 信州の浅間山（あさまやま）は十月三十一日の夜より噴烟（ふんえん）の度を増（ま）し十一月
二日の朝に至りては噴火俄（ふんくわには）かに烈（はげ）しくなりて其近傍へ灰（はひ）を降（ふ）らし翌三日に至るも猶（な）ほ
未だ止（や）まず其近傍の者どもは如何（いか）なる變事（へんじ）の生ぜんも圖（はか）り難（がた）しとて安（やす）き心も無かりし
現代語訳
水島一徳氏を須東郡須走村に向かわせて詳しく調査させた上で、署長は同県警察本部へ以下の報告を行った。
「本月2日（中略）吉田分署へ出張した当署（御厨）詰め巡査・山下仲次郎が、昨3日の帰途に富士山頂の様子が平素と異なることに気づき、よく見てみると、北面の一部が崩壊したように見えた。道沿いの民家で尋ねてみたが、知らないと答えるばかりであった。しかし、山頂の一部は完全に崩壊したものと思われるとの申告があったため、直ちに巡査・木島一徳を須走村に遣わし、浅間神社の祠掌・菅沼三津三、同村常置委員・渡辺鉄蔵らに問い合わせたところ、去る月28日午前6時の強震の後、およそ10分を経て富士山が鳴動し、大雷のようであったが、崩壊はしていないと答えた。しかし木島巡査はさらに常置委員・渡辺鉄蔵を同行させ、山梨県との境にある籠坂峠の山腹まで赴き、渡辺鉄蔵とともに望遠鏡で山頂を観察したところ、山頂の北面・牛ヶ窪から釈迦ヶ岳に至る幅およそ200間、深さおよそ100間にわたって崩壊したことは間違いないとの再報告があった。このような事情であるため、山下（須走）および山梨県南都留郡中野村山中その他近傍の者で、この崩壊を知っていた者は一人もなく、小官も本日初めてこれを知り、この手続きに及んだ次第である。これは去る28日午前6時30分の地震によって崩壊したものと考えます。以上ご報告申し上げます。

追記：その真偽は定かでないが、渡辺鉄蔵の陳述によれば、地震の約10日前に富士山頂に萌黄色の雲がたなびいているのを見たとのことである。また、崩壊した部分は北面であるため、管内（静岡県側）からは判然とせず、山梨県側から見ると幾分はっきりと見えるとのことである。
これについて、山梨県南都留郡役所から直ちに職員を派遣し、山麓の福地村近傍において事実を調査させたところ、鳴動を聞いた者が一人もいないとのことであった。さらに、静岡県警察官が認知したという籠坂峠に赴き、望遠鏡で詳しく観察したが、積雪のため崩壊の痕跡は判然とせず、ただ籠坂峠に住む者の話によれば、地震の後およそ5分間に若干の鳴動があり、牛ヶ窪の上辺あたりがいくぶん崩壊したように思われた、と言うに過ぎなかった。
●浅間山が灰を降らす 信州の浅間山は10月31日の夜より噴煙の量が増し、11月2日の朝には噴火が急に激しくなってその近傍に灰を降らせ、翌3日になってもまだ止まず、近傍の人々はいかなる変事が起こるかもしれないと、心が落ち着かない状態であった。

Officer Mizushima Ittoku was dispatched to Suhashiri Village in Suntō District to conduct a thorough investigation, after which the station chief submitted the following report to the prefectural police headquarters:
"On the 2nd of this month (text omitted), Constable Yamashita Nakajirō of this station (Mikuriya), who had been dispatched to the Yoshida sub-station, noticed on his return journey on the 3rd that the appearance of the summit of Mount Fuji differed from normal. Upon careful observation, part of the northern face appeared to have collapsed. When he inquired at roadside dwellings, people only replied that they did not know. Nevertheless, as there was a report suggesting that part of the summit had indeed collapsed, Constable Kijima Ittoku was immediately sent to Suhashiri Village to make inquiries with Suganuma Mitsumi, shrine official of the Sengen Shrine, and Watanabe Tetsuzō, a standing committee member of the same village. They responded that following the strong earthquake at 6 a.m. on the 28th of last month, after approximately ten minutes, Mount Fuji began to rumble like great thunder, but that no collapse had occurred. Nevertheless, Constable Kijima further encouraged standing committee member Watanabe Tetsuzō to accompany him. Proceeding to the mountainside at Kagosaka Pass on the border with Yamanashi Prefecture, they observed the summit through a telescope together with Watanabe Tetsuzō. A subsequent report confirmed without doubt that the northern face of the summit, from Ushigakubo to Shakagatake, had collapsed over a width of approximately 200 ken and a depth of approximately 100 ken. Given these circumstances, not a single person in the areas of Suhashiri and Nakanomura in Minamitsuru District, Yamanashi Prefecture, or in the surrounding vicinity had been aware of this collapse, and I myself only learned of it today, hence the filing of this report. I believe this collapse was caused by the earthquake that occurred at 6:30 a.m. on the 28th. I hereby respectfully submit this report.

Addendum: While the veracity of the following is uncertain, according to the testimony of Watanabe Tetsuzō, approximately ten days before the earthquake, he observed yellowish-green clouds drifting around the summit of Mount Fuji. Furthermore, since the collapsed section is on the northern face, it cannot be clearly discerned from within the jurisdiction (the Shizuoka side), but can be seen somewhat more distinctly from the Yamanashi Prefecture side.
In connection with this matter, the Minamitsuru District Office of Yamanashi Prefecture immediately dispatched officials to investigate the facts near Fukuchi Village at the foot of the mountain, but not a single person had heard any rumbling. Further investigation was carried out at Kagosaka Pass, where the Shizuoka Prefecture police officer had made his observation, and the summit was examined closely through a telescope; however, due to snow accumulation, the traces of any collapse were not clearly visible. Only residents of Kagosaka Pass offered the modest account that, approximately five minutes after the earthquake, there had been a slight rumbling, and it seemed as though the area above Ushigakubo had partially collapsed.
●Mount Asama Showers Ash Mount Asama in Shinshū began increasing its volcanic emissions from the night of October 31st. By the morning of November 2nd, the eruption suddenly intensified and showered ash on the surrounding areas. The eruption continued into the following day, the 3rd, showing no signs of abating, and the people living nearby were deeply unsettled, uncertain of what calamity might befall them.
