(...continued from previous page) ...synthesizing and shaping it, illuminating it with divine clarity, expanding and extending it, and through question-and-answer form, rectifying it and calling it a *canon* (*jing*). How profound this *canon* is! Is it not a work in which Heaven and Humanity are united as one? Elucidating its principles (*li*), it never sinks into the pedantry of mere technical argumentation; dissecting its substance, it never strays into the domain of emblems and numerology (*xiang-shu*). All that is fathomless in the mysterious workings of creation since the beginning of Heaven and Earth — all that is inscrutable in its subtle profundities — is completely illuminated and brought to light within this *canon*. Ah, how elevated and deep, how manifest and illustrious it is! Having at last read it through to the end, I found it resonating deeply within my own heart.
I have always been burdened with a narrow and untalented constitution, and have long sought to master the depths of empirical investigation (*zhice*). Alas — since my earliest infancy, I had secretly received instruction from my late father (*xiān dàfū*). My late father upheld the learning transmitted by my ancestor, the Lord Wenyi Gong Can, and would always point things out and instruct me, his child. He would say: "The arrangement of the lunar lodges and celestial enclosures is thus. The courses of the sun and moon are thus. The direct and retrograde motions of the Five Planets, and the increases and decreases of their orbital degrees, are thus." In my childhood I retained only the awe-inspiring solemnity of his teachings in my breast. As I grew older, I devoted myself ever more wholeheartedly to this discipline. And yet, though the world is not without Confucian scholars of recondite and nearly lost learning, I was in the end never able to find even a single encounter — one in which we might mutually deliberate and clarify, question and correct one another. Would this not be falling into the very reproach of "looking through a tube" or "viewing the sky from the bottom of a well" — that is, seeing only a narrow portion of the whole? The Way of Heaven is truly, truly inexhaustible: in its unfathomability, it cannot be fathomed; in its immeasurability, it cannot be measured.
I have long pondered these matters. The celestial equator (*chidao*) divides Heaven equally into two halves. The ecliptic (*huangdao*) winds around it obliquely, like a ring, intersecting it. From ancient times to today, there is always a natural shifting and migration [of these relationships], and it is impossible to grasp them as fixed and invariable rules. Take the Moon (*taiyin*) as an example: at its first appearance (the new crescent moon), it can be seen upright, tilted, or horizontal — there are these differences. And in its monthly revolution along its orbit (*youlin*), there is a migration from north to south and from south to north. When the moon traverses the lunar lodges of *Bi* (壁, the Wall) and *Kui* (奎, the Legs), it advances approximately fourteen or fifteen degrees per day. When it traverses the lodges of *Ji* (箕, the Winnowing Basket) and *Dou* (斗, the Dipper), it advances only about eleven or twelve degrees per day. Is this not because the lodges from *Bi* and *Kui* through *Shen* (参, Orion) and *Jing* (井, the Well) are situated at the zenith? The lunar sphere (*yuètīan*) is therefore far from them — and thus [the arc of orbit] is narrow, and yet it appears to move more rapidly. As for [the lodges] from *Kang* (亢) and *Di* (氐) through to *Ji* and *Dou*, which travel obliquely toward the southwest — the lunar sphere is near to them...
