至てうるはし清水（しみづ）きよらかにして鴬はなはだ光（ひかり）つよし極（ごく）暑
といへども山半（やまのなかば）より上は蚊帳（かや）をたれず茶□□艸を手製（しゆせい）して
家々に貯（たくは）ふ他處（たしょ）へは不出｜田畑（たはた）も相應（さうおう）に實（みの）りして一己の用は
足りぬ夏天（なつ）も朝夕は袷（あはせ）を用ゆ秋は残（ざん）暑はやくしりぞきて
虫（むし）るひ音を入（い）る事早く紅葉（もみぢ）楓（かへで）柞（いす）うるし紅（くれなゐ）を染（そむ）る事早し

暮秋（ぼしう）には時雨（しぐれ）をはこび雁（かり）はやくわたり猪（しゝ）鹿（しか）あしを交ゆ
現代語訳
この湯は明礬湯で、主に眼病に効果がある。曇りの日には湧き出ない。この性質は芦の湯の達磨湯と同じで、二月の彼岸が過ぎる頃から少しずつ湧き出て、初夏を最盛期とする。しっかりとした湯宿はなく、箱根の宿場から湯が出ている間を何日と限って、湯小屋を借りるのである。上の山を冠ヶ岳といい、ここにも明礬が産出する。仙石原から御厨へかかり、沼津へ出る道があるが、とても寂しい所である。
四季について
箱のような形をした山は、東南は低く、西北は高くて深い。魚や鳥獣が豊富で、七湯ともに寒さが強く、暑さは弱い。特に山の中腹より上、芦の湯の方は寒気が殊に強い。春には鶯、燕、雲雀、山鴫、蛙等が多く、菫、山吹、桜、山独活、蕗、蕨、薇、椎茸等が豊富である。桜は山の中腹より下では花びらが大きくて色が美しく、中腹より上では花が小さく枝ぶりが細く、非常に面白い。大体四月が最盛期である。常緑樹は松、杉、柘等、酔木、竹は山上に矢柄竹が多く生じ、山下には大竹がたくさんある。
夏は四月末から次第に暑さを催し、時鳥が早く出て鶯と声を交わす。桑調べの類をこれを伐って名物の挽物細工に使う。杜若、白百合、皐月等の花がとても美しい。清水が清らかで蛍がたいへん光り、極暑といえども山の中腹より上では蚊帳を垂らさない。茶を手製して家々に貯蔵し、他所へは出さない。田畑も相応に実って一家の用は足りる。夏でも朝夕は袷を用いる。
秋は残暑が早く退いて、虫類が音を立てることが早く、紅葉、楓、櫟、漆が紅を染めることが早い。また春蘭、石斛、姫葛、豆苔、岩檜葉の類があちこちに繁茂する。晩秋には時雨を運び、雁が早く渡り、猪、鹿が足跡を交える。

This hot spring is an alum spring, particularly effective for eye diseases. It does not emerge on cloudy days. This characteristic is the same as the Daruma hot spring of Ashi-no-yu. It begins to emerge gradually from around the time after the spring equinox in February, with early summer being its peak season. There are no proper inn facilities, so visitors rent hot spring huts for a limited number of days while the springs are flowing from Hakone station. The mountain above is called Kanmuri-ga-take, where alum is also produced. There is a road from Sengokubara through Mikuriya to Numazu, but it is a very lonely place.
Seasonal Observations
The box-shaped mountain is low in the southeast and high and deep in the northwest. Fish, birds, and beasts are abundant, and all seven hot springs have strong cold and weak heat. Particularly above the middle of the mountain toward Ashi-no-yu, the cold is especially strong. In spring, there are many nightingales, swallows, larks, mountain snipes, frogs, etc., and violets, yamabuki, cherry blossoms, mountain udo, butterbur, bracken, royal fern, shiitake mushrooms, etc. are abundant. Cherry blossoms below the middle of the mountain have large petals with beautiful colors, while above the middle they have small flowers with delicate branches, which is very interesting. Generally, April is the peak season. Evergreen trees include pine, cedar, mulberry, etc., Japanese andromeda; among bamboos, arrow-shaft bamboo grows abundantly on the mountaintop, while large bamboo is plentiful at the mountain base.
In summer, heat gradually builds from the end of April, with cuckoos appearing early and exchanging songs with nightingales. Mulberry and similar trees are cut and used for famous turned woodcraft. Flowers like iris, white lilies, and azaleas are very beautiful. The clear water is pure and fireflies shine very brightly. Even in extreme heat, mosquito nets are not needed above the middle of the mountain. Tea is hand-made and stored in each household, not exported elsewhere. Fields also yield adequately for household needs. Even in summer, lined garments are worn morning and evening.
In autumn, the lingering heat retreats early, insects begin making sounds early, and maples, oaks, and lacquer trees turn red early. Also, spring orchids, dendrobium, princess vine, bean moss, and rock cypress flourish here and there. In late autumn, autumn rains come, geese migrate early, and wild boar and deer leave their tracks intermingled.
