岩を打て喧嘩（かまひすしく）す頭（こうべ）を廻（めぐら）せば庭上（ていしよう）の楓窓（ふうそう）を
抱（いだゐ）て暗（くら）し近（ちか）至か成｜圍碁（いご）の聲（こゑ）は軒端（のきば）を傳（つた）ふ
玉水（たまみづ）に数（かず）を添（そふ） 遙（はるか）なる三絃（みすじ）の音（ね）は故郷（ふるさと）を思ふ
療客（り？うかく）の心（こゝろ）を慰（なくさ）めるは香（かう）を合（あはせ）茶（さ）を闘てかつ
詩を唫（きん）し｜糸竹（しちく）をもて遊ぶ楽（たの）しさ舉（あけ）ていふべ

現代語訳
岩を打って喧しく音を立てている。頭を巡らせば、庭の楓の木が窓に迫るように暗く茂っている。近くでは囲碁の声が軒端を伝って聞こえてくる。玉のような水音に数を添えるかのように、遥か遠くから聞こえる三味線の音が故郷を思わせる。
湯治客の心を慰めるのは、香を合わせ、茶を闘わせ、詩を吟じ、音楽をもって遊ぶ楽しさであり、とても言葉では言い尽くせない。我々は従来、こうした技芸を楽しみとすることを知らず、ただいたずらに月日を過ごしてきたことを悔やみ、雨の中、紙合羽などを羽織り、それより次第に七湯の地を巡った。なおも尋ねるべきことが多くあったため、ここに一夜、二夜と宿を取り、詳しく図を模写して収め、これに産物などを付して「七湯のしをり」と題し、いまだ見ぬ人の心の手引きともなればと筆を執った。

およそ温泉に浴して病を治すること、ちはやぶる神代より…

The [early morning stream] strikes the rocks noisily. Turning my head, the maple tree in the garden presses darkly against the window. Nearby, the sounds of a game of go drift along the eaves. As if adding to the count of the jewel-like sounds of water, the distant notes of a shamisen evoke thoughts of home.
What soothes the hearts of the spa guests is the pleasure of blending incense, competing at tea ceremony, reciting poetry, and making music — joys that are beyond all description. We of our circle had not known to make such arts our pastime, and regretting that we had been idly letting the days pass, we donned our paper raincoats in the rain and, from there, gradually toured the seven hot springs. As there was still much more to explore, we lodged for a night, then two, carefully copying maps and collecting them, and appending local products and the like. We have titled this work "A Guide to the Seven Springs," hoping it may serve as a guide for those who have yet to see these places, and thus we took up the brush.
