○当月二日の夜、松本下荒町の久左衛門という作人が野畑へ見廻りに出たところ、久左衛門の畑に瓜・茄子を作り置いていたのを取る者がいる様子で、久左衛門がその者を捕らえようとした様子であるが、久左衛門は切り殺された。久左衛門には手傷が数箇所あり、いずれも刀・脇指の傷には見えない。右の相手にも傷が付いている様子が見られ、死んで倒れていた場所の外の道筋にも血がこぼれていた。これにより御吟味があるので、各々の家来の内の下々を厳しく吟味した上で、疑わしい者がいれば早速申し達すべきである。怪しい者共に宿を貸した者、並びに長屋等に置いた者共は書付を差し出すべきである。もしその者共の内、当月二日以後他所へ出た者がいれば、その名の下に書付を差し出すべきである。

右については渥美新右衛門の方で色々と吟味を致したが、わからなかった由である。これにより御家中・宿場等を吟味したい由を新右衛門が申し達したので、早々に右の趣を同役と申し談じ、新右衛門と相談して触れるよう、酒井典膳の方から河崎三郎助へ申し聞かせたところ、則ち何も申し談じて御触書を御家老中に入れて披見し、今日御家中へ御触れとした。

The above directive was communicated to only one side of the Edo town quarter. However, the back areas of the town are to be dredged by townspeople sending out their own workers to assist.

First entry, 5th year of Hōei, Year of the Rat
○On the night of the 2nd of this month, a tenant farmer named Kyūzaemon from Shimoara-machi in Matsumoto went out to check on his field, where it appeared that someone had been stealing the melons and eggplants he had been growing. It appears that Kyūzaemon attempted to apprehend the person, but Kyūzaemon was cut down and killed. Kyūzaemon had wounds in several places, none of which appeared to be from a sword or short sword. The assailant also appeared to have sustained wounds, and blood was spilled along the road outside the place where he was found dead. In light of this, an investigation is being conducted, and after strictly questioning the lower-ranked servants among each household's retainers, any suspicious individuals should be reported immediately. Those who have provided lodging to suspicious persons, as well as those who have placed them in tenement housing, should submit a written report. If any among those persons have left for other places after the 2nd of this month, their names should also be noted in the written report.

Regarding the above, various investigations were carried out by Atsumi Shinemon, but the matter remained unresolved. As Shinemon reported his wish to conduct investigations in samurai households and post towns, he was instructed to quickly consult with his colleagues and coordinate with Shinemon on how to issue the directive. This was communicated from Sakai Tenzen to Kawasaki Saburōsuke, whereupon after consultation, the directive document was submitted for inspection to the senior retainers, and today it was issued to the samurai households.
