【Right folio】 △ In the second block of Kita-Shinagawa-juku, there lived a girl named Tsune, aged fifteen, daughter of the Kurata-ya inn, which operated as a lodging house on rented land. On the night of the second day of the tenth month, she evacuated to the precincts of Kaitoku-ji temple in Minami-Shinagawa due to the earthquake. On the night of the eighth day of the same month, a white-haired old man appeared to her and said: "Around the eleventh day of this month, the dangers of water and fire will be most acute. Because you are of upright and honest character, I shall cause you to escape these calamities. As proof of this, I shall give you this. Keep it with you and you shall be spared from sudden misfortune." No sooner had he spoken these words than she realized she was in a dream, and in her hand she held a round feather fan (hōuchiwa). The matter was so extraordinary that she went to report it to the local magistrate (daikan), which in itself may also be called remarkable. △ Asakusa Hakkenjichō — Sōtō School of Zen Buddhism — Tenryūzan Gyokusō-ji Temple On the night of the second day of the tenth month, the main hall, monks' quarters, and other buildings were collapsed by the earthquake and then burned down entirely, leaving not a single object intact. Afterward, when the burned ruins were cleared away, everything had been reduced to ash, yet the single memorial tablet (ihai) listed below alone remained — which is also a most remarkable thing. [Year and date] Myōtei-in Jissō Teikan Daishi This was the memorial tablet of a patron of this temple, a hatamoto (bannerman) of over one thousand koku in stipend. That this tablet alone survived is truly wondrous and extraordinary. 【Left folio】 △ Guard duty at Babazaki-mon gate, from the domain of Lord Niwa, Lord of Nagato: Yamaguchi Shūhei The above-named Shūhei was serving as a guard (katame-yaku) at this post when, during the earthquake, the watchtower (mitsuke-yagura) and the guard post were both brought down by the tremors, and were then further destroyed by fire. Now, the moment this Shūhei perceived the earthquake, he stepped out of the guardhouse intending to secure the fire, but at that very instant the guardhouse shook and collapsed, a beam fell, and his right arm was pinned beneath it. Unable to do anything, he cried out and called for his fellow guards, but as they were all occupied with fighting the fires, not a single one came to his aid. Resigned to his fate, he steeled himself for death and lay there awaiting the end. Then his son came rushing up; seeing his father's condition, he was greatly alarmed and began urgently removing the ridgepole and timbers from above, but before he could finish, burning embers were already raining down upon them from overhead, leaving no time for rescue. At this point, Shūhei addressed his son, saying: "In this sudden emergency, if you try to save me, we will both perish in this fire together. Even if I must lose an arm, it would be shameful and wretched to simply burn to death here. Cut off this arm for me." The son, overcome with grief, pleaded, "How could I ever raise a blade against my own father? I beg you, please excuse me from this." Shūhei grew angry and said: "To let your father die a violent death before your eyes is not the way of a son. Hurry and cut it off. After that, there are things to be done. Be quick about it!" Pressed in this way, the son drew his sword in tears, cried out "Ei!" (a shout of resolve), and cut off the arm. The father showed no sign of agony, and together they escaped through the flames, parent and child both surviving the danger. Upon hearing of this, the domain lord said, "Even though the blade was turned against the father's own body, the act of saving his life is entirely right and proper," and he granted both of them an increase in stipend (fuchi) along with numerous other rewards. *Ichitōsai Yoshitsuna, artist*
