【Right page】 In this earthquake, damage varied in severity, but particularly due to the conflagration that spread from Shibai-chō, in the area west of that location, before the Shinmei Shrine, in Mishima-chō and Monzen-chō, on the night of the second day, the large buildings on both sides of the street collapsed and fell onto the main road, with timber and roof tiles piling up like mountains. That there was no fire here was surely owing to the good judgment and conduct of the people. Furthermore, it was said that there were those who were injured by being trapped under collapsed buildings, and so people passed through the area by poking poles down from atop the rubble to check whether any persons or objects lay beneath. Now then, within the precincts of the Shinmei Shrine, although there was damage in various places, the main sanctuary itself 【Left page】 sustained no damage. In the area to the south, around Shichiken-chō, Kata-monzen, and Naka-monzen-chō, the shaking may have been less intense, and though there was some damage, the number of completely collapsed houses was small. In general, wherever there had been fires in the vicinity, collapse sites were exceedingly numerous. That earthquakes have certain "lines" (筋, suji)—corridors of intense shaking—and that areas falling along these lines experience stronger tremors, is something that this earthquake gave us renewed cause to reflect upon. Gazing up at the ever-loftier divine majesty, protecting the people of a tranquil land— such is the power of the gods, filling one to the brim, packed full in Iikura.
