My friend, a man named Ōshima Jisuke, had a remarkable talent for fishing in the middle of the night. On the night of the second day of the tenth month, as he was foraging along the tidal flats, he heard people making a great commotion in the direction of Tamachi. Turning his attention to the surroundings to see what was happening, the mountains in the distance appeared somehow closer than usual, and a large ship anchored at Shinagawa suddenly seemed to leap up about three shaku into the air — and before he could take this in, a violent trembling shook everything like the rumbling of hundreds of thunderclaps. Yet the sea itself was, on the contrary, strangely calm, filled with an indescribably eerie stillness. Before long, fires broke out in various parts of Edo and the scene became one of great turmoil. Uncertain of the safety of his employer's household, he abandoned his fishing equipment on the spot and rushed back to Edo, where he rendered great service. I record this here in passing.
