【Right folio】 △ One: 100 barrels of umeboshi (pickled plums) 《Marginal note: distributed to the relief shelters inside Fukagawa Hachiman Shrine》 Shibaguchi 1-chōme — Hirashibaya Kōshichi One: 35 barrels of the same 《Marginal note: distributed to the Asakusa relief shelters》 Same person 【Entry No. 38】 Both sides of Shibai-chō burned for approximately one chō. To the west, the fire stopped in front of the Sendai domain's middle residence; to the east, it stopped in front of the Aizu domain's middle residence. △ One: 2 shu in gold each, to the residents of the neighborhood Shiba Rōgetsu-chō — Sakaiya, name unknown (Additionally, 1 shu each was distributed to Shibai-chō) One: 2 shu in gold each, to the residents of the neighborhood Same chō — Kineya, name unknown (Additionally, 1 shu each was distributed to Shibai-chō) △ The Lord of Sendai (whose personal name is Yoshikuni) sent several thousand pine boards as expressions of sympathy to neighboring lords in the wake of this earthquake. The costs for this are said to have come from his personal treasury funds. Furthermore, learning that the residents of the four towns in front of his gate had suffered losses to fire and that other dwellings had been shaken to collapse, causing extreme hardship, he immediately conducted an inquiry and graciously granted one bale of domain rice (containing 5 to 2 shō) per household. 【Left folio】 In addition, two bu in gold each was bestowed upon the town officials, watchmen, and firefighters (tobi-ninsoку). Given that the samurai households had been in a period of austerity since the previous year, the fact that such an abundance of resources was distributed and the hardships of so many people were relieved is so deeply moving and worthy of reverence that it brings one to tears of gratitude. Now, a certain person living in Shibai-chō who made his living selling illustrated storybooks (ezōshi) was greatly pleased to receive the aforementioned relief aid. However, having not yet found lodgings after the fire, he had only managed to put together a makeshift shelter using doors and shoji screens to keep out the rain. As the graciously bestowed rice bale was too precious to treat carelessly, he sought to have someone else keep it for him, but in the chaos of the time, no one was available to do so. With no other option, he placed the bale inside the narrow enclosure and sat upon it day and night to guard it. A friend who saw this laughed and joked that he looked like "a layman's version of the Great Daikoku Deity." This, it must be said, is entirely attributable to the blessings bestowed by his lord. 【Entry No. 39】 In the areas of Teppōzu, Akashi-chō, and Jikken-chō, approximately two chō in all directions burned. The upper residence of Lord Matsudaira of Awaji was consumed by the spreading fire. The residence of Lord Hosokawa of Noto in the same area sustained severe damage. Funamatsuchō, Minato-chō, and surrounding areas sustained severe damage with many collapses, and are in much the same state as if they had burned. △ The entire area of Tsukiji was struck by severe tremors. △ At Hongan-ji Temple, the main hall was damaged and the monks' quarters within the temple grounds sustained severe damage with collapses. In the same area, to the south of Kazuma-bashi bridge, both samurai residences and townspeople's homes suffered damage with many collapses. △ From Minami-Iida-chō to Samu-bashi bridge, there was major damage with collapsed houses. Kami-Yanagihara-chō… (continues on the next page)
