【三巻十九丁裏】
此（この）ほりの土（つち）にてやしきなにほとたかく
なりそといふ時に

【三巻十九丁裏】
この堀の土にて屋敷が何程高くなるかという時に
[高さ三尺七寸六厘三毛 堀の幅 五間 深さ三間 （一辺）百二十間]
【三巻廿丁表】
まず百二十間から堀の広さ五間を（両側で十間）引けば百十五間となる。これに四を掛ければ四百六十間となる。これに五間（堀の幅）を掛ければ二千三百（坪）となる。これに深さ三間を掛ければ六千九百坪となる。これを右（脇）に別に置いておき、また左に百二十間と置いて、堀の幅五間ずつを両（辺）にて引けば（百二十間から十間を引いて）百十間となる。これを左右（に百二十間と百十間として）置いて掛ければ一万二千百坪となる。これで右の六千九百坪を割れば五分七厘……となる。これに六尺五寸を掛ければ三尺七寸六厘三毛、突き上げてよしと答える。

First, subtract the moat width of 5 ken (on each side, totaling 10 ken) from 120 ken, leaving 115 ken. Multiply this by 4 to get 460 ken [the total inner perimeter length]. Multiply this by 5 ken (the moat width) to get 2,300 [tsubo]. Multiply this by the depth of 3 ken to get 6,900 tsubo [the volume of excavated earth]. Set this aside to the right. Next, place 120 ken to the left, and subtract 5 ken of moat width from each of the two sides (totaling 10 ken), leaving 110 ken. Place these two figures — 120 ken and 110 ken — to the left and right and multiply them together to get 12,100 tsubo [the area of the inner estate]. Divide the above 6,900 tsubo by this to get 0.57[…] . Multiply this by 6 shaku 5 sun [the conversion factor from ken to shaku] to get 3 shaku, 7 sun, 6 rin, 3 mō — this is the height to which the estate is raised. Answer confirmed.
