〔Upper diagram: mouth (opening) 1 shaku 4 sun 5 bu, depth 4 sun 5 bu, bottom 1 shaku 3 sun 5 bu〕
When asked how much water this vessel holds:
○ It holds 1 to 1 shō 1 gō 5 shaku 8 sai 4 satsu.
The method: Add the bottom diameter of 1 shaku 3 sun 5 bu to the mouth diameter of 1 shaku 4 sun 5 bu to get 2 shaku 8 sun. Divide this by 2 to get 1 shaku 4 sun. Place this on both sides and multiply to get 1.96. Multiply this by 0.79 to get 1.5484. Multiply this by the depth of 4 sun 5 bu to get 0.69678. Multiply this by 16 to get 1 to 1 shō 1 gō 5 shaku 8 sai 4 satsu.
This is the approximate method; the precise calculation (hon-zan) is transmitted by oral instruction.

《Title: Problem 17》 There is an arithmetic problem concerning riding horses.
△ When three people ride two horses along a road of 3 ri, how many ri does each person ride?
Each person rides 2 ri.
The first person rides 2 ri from the start and walks the remaining 1 ri. The second person rides 1 ri, walks 1 ri in the middle, then rides 1 more ri at the end. The third person walks 1 ri at the beginning, then rides 2 ri at the end. The detailed method for this is given on the following page.
