正月にねずみの父と母が交わって、子を十二匹産む。親とあわせて十四匹になる。このねずみたちは、二月には子もまた子を十二匹ずつ産むゆえに、親とあわせて九十八匹になる。このように、月に一度ずつ、親も子も、またその孫も曾孫も、月々に十二匹ずつ産む時、一年中にどれほどの数になるかといえば、親も子も合わせて年中に――

In the first month (January), a pair of mice mates and gives birth to twelve offspring, making fourteen mice in total including the parents. In the second month, the offspring also each give birth to twelve mice, so that together with the parents there are ninety-eight mice. In this manner, once per month, the parents, the children, their grandchildren, and their great-grandchildren all give birth to twelve mice each month. How many mice will there be in total over the course of a year? When we count all parents and offspring together throughout the year——
