【Volume 4, Folio 32 verso】 [1,000 silver coins] The cube would measure 6 sun, 7 bu, 4 rin, 7 mō on each side. Method: 1,000 silver coins weigh 43 kan. Dividing this by 140 monme gives, in area of 1-sun-square cross-sections, 307 tsubo, 1 bu, 4 rin, 2 mō, 8 shi, 5 kotsu, 71. This is then solved using the cube root method (kairiū-hō). [1,000 gold coins] Length: 1 shaku, 4 sun Thickness: 4 sun, 6 bu [50 kan of silver] Length: 1 shaku, 6 sun Thickness: 6 sun 【Volume 4, Folio 33 recto】 《Title: Problem 11 — Calculating the total length of thread in one tan of silk, laid out end to end》 The total length of thread in one tan of silk is: 7 ri, 10 chō, 35 ken, 5 shaku, 3 sun — combining both warp and weft threads. Of which, the warp (tate) threads total: 4 ri, 11 chō, 4 ken, 4 shaku. Of which, the weft (nuki) threads total: 2 ri, 35 chō, 31 ken, 1 shaku, 3 sun. First, there are 1,800 warp threads, each measuring 2 jō, 8 shaku in length. Taking into account the diagonal (the actual path of the thread as it weaves), this becomes 3 jō, 3 shaku, 6 sun. Multiplying this by 1,800 gives 6,048 jō. Dividing this by 6 shaku 5 sun gives 9,304 ken, 4 shaku. Dividing this by 60 ken gives 155 chō, 4 ken, 4 shaku. Dividing this by 36 chō gives 4 ri, 11 chō, 4 ken, 4 shaku — and thus the answer is known.
