《第六 立木の長さを積もる事》
これは杣人（そまびと）などが、曲尺（かねじゃく）のこの股の間から、木の梢（こずえ）を見上げる。そして、そこから木の根元まで打って（距離を測って）、長さを求めるものである。

木の長さは七間半というのを求める。
鼻紙（はながみ）を四角に折り、さらに角（かど）を対角線に折って（三角形にして）、下の角に糸で小石などのおもりをつける。そして、下の角から上の角まで見通して、木の梢（こずえ）を見る。そのようにして、そこから木の根元まで七間あれば、また自分の身の丈の半分を加えるのである。

**Section 6: On Estimating the Height of a Standing Tree**
This method is used by woodcutters and the like: one looks up at the treetop through the crotch [of a square tool], and then measures the distance from that point to the base of the tree to determine its height.

Finding what is said to be a tree height of seven and a half *ken*:
Fold a piece of tissue paper (*hanagami*) into a square, then fold it again diagonally along the corner (making a triangle), and attach a small stone or similar weight with a thread to the lower corner [to serve as a plumb line]. Then sight from the lower corner to the upper corner to locate the treetop. If the distance from that point to the base of the tree is seven *ken*, one then adds half of one's own standing height.
