向かいに人が立っている所まで、距離がどれほどあるかを求めるという問題。
距離：三町二十八間二尺一寸七分あり。
三寸（さんずん）の曲尺（かね）に、長さ二尺一寸七分の糸をつけて、口に糸をくわえて（糸の端を歯でくわえ、曲尺を前方に伸ばして）、向かいに立っている人の丈を見る時に、曲尺にて

【三巻十一丁表】
八分（はちりん）に見える時、これ（の目盛り）に身を隠せば（すなわち対象の人が曲尺の幅に収まれば）、二分四厘（にぶしりん）となる。これにて五尺を割れば、二百八・三三三…となる。この「三三三」という端数が分からない時には、これに六五（六五分の何か、すなわち繰り返し小数の処理）をかければ、二百八間二尺一寸七分となる。これを六十間で割れば、三町二十八間二尺一寸七分と知られる。

**Section 7: On Measuring Distances in *Chō***
A problem: How far is it to the place where a person is standing opposite?
**Distance: 3 *chō* 28 *ken* 2 *shaku* 1 *sun* 7 *bu*.**
Attach a thread of length 2 *shaku* 1 *sun* 7 *bu* to a square (*kane*) of 3 *sun*, hold the end of the thread in your mouth (thereby extending the square out in front of you at a fixed distance), and sight the height of the person standing opposite against the *kane*. When the person appears to measure—

—8 *rin* [on the *kane*]: if the person's figure fits within [that measurement], it becomes 2 *bu* 4 *rin*. Dividing 5 *shaku* [the assumed height of the person] by this gives 208.333…. When one does not know what to do with the repeating "333," multiply [the remainder] by 65, and the result becomes 208 *ken* 2 *shaku* 1 *sun* 7 *bu*. Dividing this by 60 *ken* [per *chō*], one finds the answer to be 3 *chō* 28 *ken* 2 *shaku* 1 *sun* 7 *bu*.
