[Right folio]
*(Poem)*
Serve your parents
thinking only
of today —
do not trust
in tomorrow,
in this world
where nothing
is certain.
*(Commentary)*
Though everyone knows that one ought to practice filial piety toward their parents, people neglect the matter at hand, putting it off with thoughts of "if not today, then tomorrow; if not tomorrow, then the day after," and so they end up passing their entire lives in vain. As the saying goes, "Seeking three years' worth of moxa for a seven-year illness" — while one dithers in this way, one's parents may pass away before one knows it, or one may oneself depart first; there is no telling. Even if both parent and child live on together, illness or poverty may render one unable to do as one wishes. If that comes to pass, no amount of regret will be of any use. One should rouse one's spirit with the thought: "At least today, there is still a day on which I can serve." It is also said: "The filial child cherishes every moment."
[Left folio]
*(Poem)*
A woman
who surpasses all others
in jealousy
and envy —
she should be
sent away
without delay.
*(Commentary)*
Jealousy and possessiveness in a wife is a commonplace thing in this world; nine out of ten women are like this to some degree. However, when jealousy runs too deep, it becomes the root of misfortune. Because of it, the household falls into disorder and all manner of calamities arise. It is best to discern this early and part ways with such a woman. "One who is given to envy and jealousy is to be divorced," so Confucius himself declared.
