[Right folio]
*(Poem)*
Even if she has borne you children
and the years
have passed,
still —
do not let your guard down
with your wife;
never
relax your vigilance.
*(Commentary)*
Even the common proverb says: "Even if she has borne you seven children, never let your guard down with a woman." In general, women are shallow of heart and may carelessly let slip matters of great importance. Or, when faced with a crisis, some may change their minds in an instant. There are many examples of this throughout history, ancient and recent alike. It is also said that a wife, for her part, refers to her husband as *tsuma* (an end, or counterpart). When a couple first grows close, there is mutual consideration and attentiveness between them, and each conducts themselves with propriety and care. However, once they have grown long accustomed to one another, they become lax and overly familiar; their propriety and circumspection fall away, their conduct and disposition grow unruly, their true nature comes to the surface, and they end up being abandoned. Even in a close relationship, one must not forget courtesy — it is essential to maintain proper conduct and self-discipline at all times.
[Left folio]
*(Poem)*
Hard to stop,
try as one might —
a woman's eye
turned outward:
sightseeing,
going to hear sermons,
and wandering
here and there.
*(Commentary)*
It is said that women ought to spend their days within the inner chambers, and not even venture into the garden to idle about during the day. And yet, women who are fond of sightseeing and attending public recitations — dazzled by fine colors and fragrant scents, going out hither and thither without any particular errand — have restless, unsettled hearts, and are prone to bringing about improper conduct. Even if their own intentions are not especially bad, by associating with unsavory characters they may be taken advantage of, brought to disgrace, and the affair may grow into something grave. One must firmly restrain such women and keep their outings in check.
