英語訳
On the night of the 2nd day of the 10th month of the 2nd year of Ansei (year of the Wood Rabbit), around the Hour of the Pig (approximately 10 PM), a sudden great earthquake struck, causing the provinces of the Kantō region to collapse simultaneously. The damage to residences, halls, and shrines was immense. In particular, the shaking was severe within Edo, with the northern district of Senju-juku half destroyed, Kozukahara-chō burned to the ground, and the areas of Sanya, Asakusa-chō, and Shin-Torigoe suffering an exceptionally large number of collapsed houses. The Zenza (coin mint) in the riverside town burned down. In Imado-chō, there were many collapses, and fifteen to sixteen houses near the bridge burned. Hashiba's Sōsenji temple suffered minor damage, as did its grounds.
All five districts of Shin-Yoshiwara collapsed simultaneously. A fire broke out in Kyō-machi 2-chōme and spread throughout the area; fires also broke out in various other locations, burning everything to the ground. The number of deaths among courtesans and others, men and women alike, was so great as to be uncountable. Not a single storehouse remained; everything became an open field. The Nihon Tsutsumi (embankment) cracked in various places. The public notice board area was unharmed, and the fifty-ken road alongside it survived the fire.
○ From Tamachi 2-chōme through 1-chōme, Yamakawa-chō, Kita-shin-chō north of Takemon (Shōten Yoko-chō), Kita-Umamichi, the grounds of Sensōji temple, and the temples of Kita-tani and Minami-tani all burned completely. Minami-Umamichi partially survived. Shōten-chō and Yamano-shuku suffered many collapses, while Matsuchiyama was unharmed. Kawara-chō was mostly destroyed.
○ Kawarazaki-za theater in Saruwaka-chō 3-chōme, Ichimura-za in 2-chōme, Nakamura-za in 1-chōme, and the theater backstage area (gakuya) and Shindō all burned completely. The actors' Shindō survived in places, and Nakamura Fukusuke, Onoe Eijirō, Bandō Takesaburō, Bandō Kichiya, Morita Kan'ya, along with teahouse operators and ordinary residents, survived. Yamano-shuku burned from Kuhon-ji temple to the opposite side and as far as Hanakawado and Tozawa tenement housing.
○ The main hall of Kinryūzan Kannon (Sensōji temple) was unharmed, while the subordinate shrines and structures suffered damage in various places. The rental houses within the temple grounds were largely destroyed. There were many collapsed houses around Namiki-chō and Tawara-chō, and Naka-chō and Sangen-chō also suffered many collapses.
A fire broke out in the middle of Komagata and was stopped at Suwa-chō, Kurofune-chō, Miyoshi-chō, and Omayagashi. The military rice storehouse suffered significant damage but came through safely. The areas around Kaya-chō, Fukui-chō, Ōdaichi, and the Kanda River banks suffered many collapses.
○ The main hall of Higashi Honganji temple suffered major damage but survived; the rear gate collapsed, and many temple buildings within the grounds were destroyed. About half a chō beyond Kikuya Bridge burned. Temples in Shintera-chō suffered damage in various places, while Seiganjii and Hōonji were unharmed. The back area and the precinct of Yugyōji temple's gate suffered damage in various places. The rice fields and the residence of Lord Katō Ōkura Shōsuke suffered many collapses, and the ridge enclosure... (continues on next page)
