あやしんで早そく御地頭松平丹後守殿え

現代語訳
長さ三間、横幅七寸余りに裂けて割れたが、この郷の人が三月二十六日の夜に用事があって無性院まで行く途中、この割れた地面の辺りに差し掛かると、割れ目の中から手毬のような火の玉がぽんぽんと弾けて三つ四つ五つも飛び出してきた。郷の人は仰天してあわてて走り、人家へと逃げ込んだ。
翌日早朝、人々に告げ知らせると、郷の人々が大勢その場所へ行って見ると、割れた地面の内側から煙草の煙ほどの煙が立ち上っていた。郷の人々は不審に思い、早速御地頭の松平丹後守殿に注進したところ、丹後守殿から見分役が派遣され、確認された。このように火気は七日ほど続いて止んだのは実に不思議なことである。
由村の地震による大荒れのこと
三月二十四日の大地震によって、越後街道の由村の荒れというのは、そびえ立つ苔山を崩し落として、田畑や家屋敷を泥土の下に埋めてしまった。

The ground split and cracked about three ken long and seven sun wide. A villager from this area was traveling to Mujōchin on business on the night of March 26th. When he approached the area of this ground fissure, fireballs like hand balls began popping out from within the crack - three, four, five of them bursting forth. The villager was astounded, ran in panic, and fled to a nearby house.
The next morning, when he told others about this, many villagers went to see the site. They observed smoke rising from within the ground fissure, about as thick as tobacco smoke. The villagers found this strange and immediately reported it to the local lord, Matsudaira Tango-no-kami. Tango-no-kami sent inspectors to investigate and confirm the phenomenon. The fire activity continued for about seven days before stopping - truly a mysterious occurrence.
Concerning the Great Devastation at Yu Village Due to the Earthquake
The great earthquake of March 24th caused what is called "the devastation of Yu Village" on the Echigo Highway - it caused the towering moss-covered mountain to collapse, burying rice fields, dry fields, and residential compounds under mud and earth.
