From dusk, clouds appeared in the west as usual, and a golden hue was cast upon the hazy vegetation, while the sky turned crimson. That same night at the Hour of the Dog (around 10 p.m.), fire broke out, and ash and sand rained down over an area of more than four ri to the south of Shinshū Oiwake and Komoro. The fire stones from that eruption remain visible to this day. To the north, the flow extended all the way to the mountain's foothills, where the stones accumulated, forming features known as "Oshikiribata" (thrust edges). Although the mountain has truly been a burning peak since ancient times, the temple administrator (bettō) of this mountain came about when, on the tenth day of the third month of Bunmei 1 (1469), a single monk arrived from a place called Matsuba-no-shō in Echizen Province, climbed the mountain, and received various miraculous and wondrous sacred dreams. Thereafter, he took up quiet residence in Kamanohara Village, frequently ascending the mountain, and later named his temple Enmei-ji, which became a sub-temple of Tōeizan (Kan'ei-ji in Ueno). This monk was named Gikai, and he was the founding abbot of Enmei-ji and the bettō of the Asama Daimyōjin shrine.
At this time, beginning on the ninth day of the fourth month of Tenmei 3, the year of Mizunoto-U (1783), eruptions began and ash and sand fell without ceasing day after day. On the third and fourth days of the seventh month in particular, the eruptions became extremely severe, and from Karuizawa, Usui, Sakamoto, Matsumoto, Tano, Annaka, and Takasaki...
