新吉原の江戸町・京町・角町・揚屋町・伏見町・仲の町など、遊廓内のすべての町が地震によって倒壊し、さらにその上に出火したため、およそ二千三百人余りが死亡した。負傷者の数は数え切れないほどである。大門外の御高札、並びにこの側の川は焼け残った。右側（東側）が焼け、日本堤の地は地割れが生じた。遊廓内には土蔵が一か所も残らず、すべて焼けた。田町より出火し、一丁目・二丁目、袖摺稲荷、土手下のあみがさ茶屋、北の方は焼け残ったが、もっとも（建物は）すべて倒壊していた。西の方では、谷中天王寺門前の二か町・山川町・馬頭観音・西方寺など二か寺は焼け残った。南の方では、馬道・北神町へと火が燃え込み、遍照院・猿若町三丁目の三座の芝居小屋がことごとく焼けた。役者仲間の新道・森田勘弥の屋敷より北の方は焼け残った。薮の内は倒壊し、焼け残った所はない。山の宿の九品寺より向かい側は残った。花川戸町の戸沢長屋は七分ほど焼けて火が止まった。馬道西側の吉祥院・徳応院・延命院・誠心院・無動院・教善院は北馬道まで、また南馬道を回った角まで焼けた。同所東側の泉凌院・泉蔵院・修善院・妙徳院・医王院・曼荼羅堂・金剛院・覚善院・法善院・妙音院・顕松院、以上の各院の間にはいろは長屋が多くあったが、すべて焼けた。同所の一の権現も焼けた。慈性院にて火が止まった。浅草寺境内・奥山の（以下次頁に続く）

[Annotation ㊀ – Shin-Yoshiwara and the Asakusa area (continued)]
In Shin-Yoshiwara, all the districts within the licensed quarter—Edo-machi, Kyō-machi, Kado-machi, Ageyamachi, Fushimi-machi, and Naka-no-machi—were completely destroyed by the earthquake. Moreover, fires then broke out upon the ruins, resulting in the deaths of approximately 2,300 or more people. The number of injured is beyond counting. The official notice board (Gokōsatsu) outside the Ōmon gate, as well as the canal on this side, survived the fire. The right (eastern) side burned, and the ground along Nihon Tsutsumi (the embankment) cracked open. Not a single storehouse within the quarter survived—all burned. A fire broke out from Tamachi, spreading through the 1st and 2nd blocks, past Sodesuri Inari Shrine and the sedge-hat tea houses below the embankment. The northern areas survived, though all buildings there had collapsed. To the west, the two towns in front of the gate of Tennō-ji Temple in Yanaka, Yamakawa-machi, the Batō Kannon, and two temples including Saihō-ji survived the fire. To the south, fire spread into Umamichi and Kitajin-machi, and Henshō-in temple, as well as all three theaters in Saruwaka-machi 3-chōme, were completely burned. The area north of the actors' quarter (Shindō) and the residence of Morita Kanya was spared from the fire. The area within the bamboo grove (Yabu-no-uchi) collapsed entirely, with nothing left standing or unburned. The area across from Kuhonji Temple in Yamanoshuku survived. About seven-tenths of the Tozawa tenement houses in Hanakawado-machi burned before the fire stopped. On the western side of Umamichi, Kichijō-in, Tokuō-in, Enmei-in, Seishin-in, Mudō-in, and Kyōzen-in all burned, from the north side of Umamichi around to the corner of the south side of Umamichi. On the eastern side of the same area, Senryō-in, Senzō-in, Shuzen-in, Myōtoku-in, Iō-in, Mandara-dō, Kongō-in, Kakuzen-in, Hōzen-in, Myōon-in, and Kenmatsu-in—all of these had numerous iroha tenement houses between them, and all burned completely.
