けふ此比はいたこやかるい沢（ざは）てはやる時分（じぶん）。きうへ田#2
ぞろいにゆかたを下￣タ着（ぎ）。こひ茶ざやの袖くち。
もへぎさなだのうら付でとんだあやまるなり西の
くぼのがぜんぼう谷や。本所のわりげすい#3あたりて見
かけるてあい。くら宿でいやかられるなま通ども二三
人。両方へわかれて土手のはしを通りながら。ひとりの
にほんざしくわへぎせるをはたいて《箱：里風》アレ〳〵
みさつせへ。田中のほうから。三まいの早かごがくるが。
いまじぶんなぜあねへに。いそがせるたろうの《箱：花暁》
ほんに何者だろうのこいつはげせねへはへ《割書：トいふうち。早｜かごは土手の》

現代語訳
○其二
今日この頃は、板子屋（伊達っぽい者）や軽薄な沢山の者がはやる時分。急に揃いの浴衣を下着に着て、濃い茶色の鞘の袖口、萌葱色の真田紐の裏付きで、とんだ気取った格好をしている。西の窪の我善坊谷やら、本所のわりげすい（割下水）あたりで見かけるような連中。蔵宿で嫌われるような半端な通い者（なま通）ども二、三人が、両方に分かれて土手の端を通りながら、一人が日本差しにくわえ煙管をはたいて——
【里風】「あれあれ、見なさいよ。田中（田舎）の方から、三枚（三人担ぎ）の早籠が来るが、今時分なぜあんなに急がせているんだろう。」
【花暁】「ほんに何者だろう、こいつは合点がいかないねえ。」
（と言ううちに、早籠は土手のきわまで来て、また田中の方へ引き返す。）
【友次郎】「あれ見なさいよ、引き返すぜ。」
【里（風）】「へへ、聞こえた。あれはたしかに、子（こ）を書き習うのだ。」
【花（暁）】「なるほど、そう言えば、中に変なやつが乗っているのう。」
【（里風）】「何になっても習いのいることだのう。これ、公（こう）のところに孔方（こうほう）は少々なしか。小菊を一帖買いたい。」
英語訳
○Part Two
Nowadays, it's the fashion for flashy dandies and frivolous types to be everywhere. They suddenly appear dressed in matching yukatas worn as undergarments, with dark tea-colored scabbard sleeve edges and moss-green sanada-braid linings — quite the affected look. The sort of fellows you'd spot around Nishinokubo's Gazenbō Valley or the Warigeshui area of Honjo. Two or three of these "half-baked men-about-town" (nama-tsū), the kind who get snubbed at pawnbroker lodges, split into two groups and walk along the edge of the embankment. One of them, wearing a sword tucked in the "Japanese style" and a pipe clenched in his mouth, taps his pipe and says——
[Rizō]: "Hey hey, look at that! A three-man express palanquin is coming from the Tanaka (countryside) direction — why on earth are they making it go so fast at this hour?"
[Hanaakebono]: "Goodness, who could that be? I can't make heads or tails of it."
(While they are speaking, the express palanquin comes right up to the edge of the embankment, then turns back in the direction it came from.)
[Tomojirō]: "Look at that — it's turning back!"
[Ri(zō)]: "Heh, I get it now. That's definitely someone practicing writing the character 'ko' (子)." [Note: the palanquin traced the shape of the character 子 by going forward and turning back]
[Hana(akebono)]: "Now that you mention it, there does seem to be a strange fellow riding in it."
[(Rizō)]: "Whatever you want to become, learning is essential. Hey, you there — do you have any 'Kōhō' [a type of writing practice paper/copybook]? I'd like to buy one booklet of 'Kogiku' [small chrysanthemum-patterned practice paper]."
